Saw a midwife today one I had never seen before and she was so rough with me trying to find heartbeat she was stood on step pushed knees into myside hauled my bump towards her and pressed doppler into bump with knees! She carried on like this for 20 mins then proceeded to take bloods and hit an artery! I was in agony afterwards so rungv up hospital and they said prob contractions is this normal

Yep massive bruise I think I mean artery, she didn't hit a vein my arm is one black mess

The taking bloods thing I don't see a problem with, did she actually tell you she hit an artery because if she punctured it it can erm... Kill you.

I once had to have an arterial canular instead of venous and it was bloody painful. Had to sew it to my skin to keep it in place. Horrible.

Everything else, tell her! Don't let her be rough with you. It's your body, your pregnancy and you don't need her being boisterous.

I would complain. That sounds horrible..

I had one when giving birth to my son when she put the IV in my hand blood was everywhere. To me it looked like it was the first time she did it, but then she told me she has been in this dept for over 20 years.. I was happy that she was called to a different patient and I only had a nurse. Oh and my DH had to help. Lol. He will never forget that. I'm surprised that he still wants children after seeing what is going on down there during labour..
This time I'm hoping that he will stay by my side the whole time. Giving birth at a different hospital.

IV's go dodgy all the time, blood does flow out sometimes it can't be helped. It's not a reflection of bad practise though. It's not going to hurt you it's just a bit of blood escaping.

I was talking about just a little bit of blood. I know with IV it is supposed to bleed a little.. The floor was covered my blanket was soaked and her hands were also covered in blood..

Sorry, do you mean at the end of your post that the hospital said you were probably having uterine contractions? How many weeks are you? Or have I misunderstood?

Hopefully all is well now but you can either request not to see her again, put a complaint in or if you do see her again complain directly.
Sometimes phlebotomy doesn't go as expected but you don't have to accept the manhandling and poor technique through the appointment. You give consent, you are asked and advised you aren't there as a storage unit. It's up to you how you'd prefer to proceed.

If you'd hit an artery it would be pumping out, dangerous - but it does sound like she's roughly punctured a larger vein, yuk!

I had some rough treatment I let go but in your case id complain as she didn't explain or apologise by the sounds of it and was uncaring..just to help other women, even if they brush you off, hopefully she'll be better in the future. These stories do scare me, had dc1 in the US and the labor nurses were lovely.

I'm 25 weeks and according to midwifes up at hospital she started mild contractionz,thankfully stopped now but now been left with bruised bump and torn muscle! I'm not sure what she hit but the word shit was uttered by her not me! Now bruised from half way down forearm to half way up upper arm, no sleevless tops for a while! She wasn't my usual midwife as mines on her jolly hollidays, I think this pregnancy sucks, lovely dr at hospital told me I could stay in or go home but I opted to go home they rang this morning to see how I was!

So they're checking on you but they haven't explained what the mw did? That's an awful bruise - hope you are able to rest at home. Id definitely complain in your shoes - hope you feel better soon.

Sounds like the hospital have been very supportive. I suggest that you make a complaint via the Supervisor of Midwives while it is all fresh in your mind.

She might have 'gone through' the vein, meaning that she punctured both sides rather than just one side and going into the vein to draw blood - this obviously results in leakage from the ruptured vein. But that amount of bruising is highly unusual - it would normally be no more than a plum sized bruise, even if you're a free bleeder and she did puncture the vein. I would go and get it looked at - you might need help to shift that amount of subcutaneous blood. (Though I am not a doctor, so it's possible that it will break down and go away on it's own like a normal bruise!)

I would definitely complain - if you were unhappy with your treatment, the supervisory midwife needs to know. Especially if she's left you in pain!

Twiglet I've had bruises as big as my whole hand after injections or having blood drawn, got a nurse to check them - fine. They do fade on their own. :) If there is significant swelling though, that's an issue.

I would be more worried about the bruised bump!!! She must have shoved you around considerably to have bruised you there!!!

I get bruises like that on my arm every time I have bloods taken but if it's unusual for you, get yourself to the GP just to check it out.

But the bruised bump??? Jeez....

Bloody hell, I had a rough midwife yesterday, I was quite shocked it was so unexpected- Ill be ready next time though, no way will a mw get chance again.

If I were you Id complain I suspect that they have already had words with her if they are checking up on you. Take pics for records too. How on earth she managed to make such a mess of you in a routine apt?!

Blood would be spurting all over the place if she had hit an artery, arteries carry blood away from the heart at very high pressure. Sounds more like a vein...anyway that's beside the point she doesn't sound very nice! I'd request not to see her again. Hope all is well now.

I have a doppler sized bruise on my side wgere midwife pushed the doppler in with her thighs with all her weight, I have a blood disorder so bruise quite easy, never had a midwife like it, I'm glad now I only see one midwife senior one! I'm totally petrified now I was ok with her finding heartbeat but u trust midwifes dnt u
