Hi

20 week scan this week, just wondering if anyone knows how many people can come with me, I have 2yo dd, 4yo ds and dh and would be great if they could all come in

I was allowed 2 adults so last time I took my mum and my husband to my 12 week scan as she'd never seen anything like that before, and it turned out that we had some difficult decisions to make following the numbers we got in the nuchal tests. All worked out fine in the end but having my mum there made it difficult as my husband and I had never dealt with anything like that before and none of us knew how to cope and my mum didn't understand it properly which made it all that much harder. There's no way I'd want a child around in that situation.

I am very surprised how some people on this thread seem to think it is a day out! Just like the people who go to the supermarket en masse or even take a trip to the local a and e with family members in tow meaning that my DS and I had to sit on the floor.

I went with my mum and dd. They waited outside until we knew all was ok then the sonographer went through the scan with dd. Very exciting for her. Could you do this?

It's not a theme park!!
It's a busy NHS department, with hardworking staff- they don't need hoardes of kids traipsing though on a day trip out.
Take the kids to Alton Towers if you want a day out.

Well I took my 5 year old ds. To help him understand there was a baby and in the hope of early bonding and including him. I just didn't really think about bad news I suppose, naively optimistic rather than over confident. I don't regret taking him but didn't see it as a day out either. It was important and I wanted him to be there that's all :)

I am sorry for your loss Sauvignon I didn't mean to be insensitive .

Please do not take your children. It is a serious medical procedure, not a family event. I will echo other posters who have said if you want your kids to see the baby book a private high street scan.

Iv taken my DS (age 2 last month) didn't even cross my mind not to to be honest. Iv had to have a fair few this pregnancy, He has an amazing understanding and loves watching the "baby on tete" (baby on tele) lol. My pregnancy started as twins and he was aware there were 2 babies. He was there when I found out I lost one. Yes I was obviously upset in front of him, but think it helped a bit him being there so I could focus on him & the love there.
I think it's lovely for children to be a part of everything and ok for them to see mummy and daddy sad as well as happy. I think you know your own child & have to make a judgement call on them alone.
Chances are it will be a lovely happy occasion anyway Grin
space wise it shouldn't be a problem. With DS I had 4 people at my 12 week scan & the sonographer didn't bat an eyelid. Call & check to make sure though.

thanks everyone for all your advice, much appreciated.

cheekymonk sums up how i viewed the whole thing, and why i wanted to bring him. i definitely didn't view the scan as entertainment. and i still don't think there's a problem with taking kids, as justhayley says, it depends on you and your child.

anyway, a PP who mentioned that the whole idea of a scan and seeing the baby is lost on younger kids (or can be) is what swayed me to not take ds in the end. i don't think he would have understood the whole experience and would probably just be asking why the picture is so blurry!
