Sciatica. Ouch!

Anyone else had this?

I'm 31 weeks into what had been a relatively 'easy' pregnancy. I woke up on Saturday morning unable to walk without shooting pains in my right leg. I saw a chiropractor (sp?) today but, as I'm unable to have X-rays, she was limited as to what she could do.

Please, someone, tell me this won't last until delivery!!

I had back pain from 6mths onwards - I fully recommend finding someone who does pregnancy massage - worked wonders for me

It could get better if the baby shifts around a bit if it is being caused or exacerbated by the baby squishing against your sciatic nerve.
I spent a week of my pregancy shuffling around like an orang-utang unable to stand up straight.

I'm sure I've got some degree of SPD as well as my pubic bone feels very 'open.' So, yes, I suspect a belt may well help. I've got another appointment on Friday with the chiropractor. I was very impressed with her, she specialises in pregnancy treatments and obviously knows her stuff. I'll look into pregnancy massage, she did some massage today but the focus is on spinal 'adjustment' to relieve symptoms.

Jessa and Megg. The Orang-utan crawling up the osteopath's stairs image is not cheering me up.

i have this - and spd - your physio should be able to give you some exercises that will strengthn the pelvic muscles - mine told me to do lots of pelvic floor exercises (lol) plus lower tummy squeezes - lying on back/side and pulling in tummy. funnily enough seems to help scatic pain as well - the other thing she did was manipulate my hip and leg and so it seemed to go back into place. sorry a bit ramblery, and can't remember the exact terms - just to let you know there is things to help, though nothing makes it totally go away for me, apart from having the db!

I suffered from this too. My physio manipllated my leg and gave me deep massage. She also advised resting with my hips flexed at 90 degree angle - in bed I had pillows under my thighs to flex my hips. Also lying on the sofa with my legs over the arm of the sofa helped. Sit in a stright high backed chair (like a dining chair) to keep your back straight also helped. Paracetamol for when it is really sore. If you have to stand for a length of time (ie ironing) stand with one foot slightly raised on a small step of some description. HTH.

Hi
I am 19 weeks and yesterday had pains in the left side of my stomach and across my hip and down by left buttock...does it sound like sciatica? I have never had this before and this is pregancy no. 3. I woke up this morning and it has completely gone (thank goodness as I feared I might have another 5 months of it!)
Has anyone else suffered similar symptoms?

JosephineSmith · 08/09/2006 10:49

This is my second pregnancy, only 16 weeks today and yet i have the back and leg pains already, had them the whole of my first pregnancy on and off through this one. Even been getting pins and needles in my left foot when its really bad. I am only 20, makes me worry what state my back is going to be in when i am 50! Cant think of many things to help the pain, moaning lots at my husband is great!! Be careful on the massage as i think if its not done correctly it can do more damage than good (esp if you moan whilst he does it )

Phmoo · 02/10/2006 10:25

I have just woken 7 times last night through this horrible pins and needles pain in my right thigh.
It's awful and is now present when I stand up.
It's keeping me awake and I'm only 14 weeks.
I fear a doctor won't refer me to a physio, so is there any self help?
