12 or 16 week scan?

The doctors receptionist told me on the phone that they didn't do 12 week scans here. Only at 16 weeks.

Can that be right? Doesn't that miss the time frame for some of the tests?

I had DD in a different area so bit confused....

Does your area not offer the nuchal test/combined bloods? As this has to be done between 12-14 weeks. Or is it 11 weeks, either way the limit is 14 weeks so yes I would question it. 16 weeks seems late.

16 weeks does seem late.
you do need a scan before 14 weeks for certain tests - I would ask to speak to someone else, maybe ring your midwife?

I thought it was a bit odd.

Don't have a midwife yet. Am 8 weeks and was ringing to make my booking in appointment (which they couldn't fit me in for till next week).

Ok, well usually, from my experience - you have your booking appointment and then the midwife refers you for a scan at the antenatal clinic

I got my appointments separately through the post.

I would speak to the mw OP, not the receptionist.

In my area you don't get a nuchal scan, we had to go private for that - you have a short viability scan at the time of your booking and then a 20 week scan to check for problems and set the EDD.

Definitely ask around to see how your area handles it, the nuchal scan was important to us so we had to make sure we arranged it in time.

I had my dating scan at 16 weeks. I didn't want the nuchal test though.

PickledSprout · 07/05/2014 10:31

Even without the test I don't think I can wait until 16 weeks to see if there is actually anything in there!

That is a really long time to wait. Perhaps double check with the MW at your booking in appt and if it is correct then perhaps consider going private for the 12 week scan. It would cost 50-100 but would be worth it for the reassurance. Are you in the UK?
