Boy or Girl?? Did my MW spoil the surprise??

I recently had a midwife appointment and whilst she was checking the heartbeat and 'feeling' my bump I asked her what size she thought the baby would be. She asked how much DD1 had weighed, I said 7lb 2oz to which she replied, 'oh, this one is bigger but then boys always are!'. When I sais 'sorry, boys??' she replied ' you do know the sex of this baby don't you?' I said no, but I think I do now.' Is there some sort of secret MW code in my notes that told her it was boy?? She didn't see my scan piccies as they were at home.

My next MW said the heartbeats per minute were 136 so that usually means a boy!!!

If I had wanted to know the sex I would have found out at the scan, why do they keep telling me these things??

I think they just base these assumptions on heartrate - they can't possibly know otherwise without scan pictures. Based on my babies' heartrates in utero ds was a dd and dd was a ds so obviously not a foolproof method!

misdee · 27/08/2006 14:22

nah, she was just guessing.

my midwife thought dd2 would be a small baby, dd2 was 9lb! dd1 had been 6lb 15oz.

pol26 · 27/08/2006 14:47

Don't believe all they tell you- all through with DD they swore she was a boy and as I was giving birth the mw kept saying 'oh he has a lovely head of black hair' etc... 'definately a boy' etc... when DD was born I was so convinced it was a boy I didn't ask. five mins later as mw was wiping her down and weighing her DP asked 'well, what is it???' To which she looked and looked shocked 'oh, it's a girl!'

Don't believe all you're told!

Elibean · 27/08/2006 17:45

Nope, she was just guessing....that heartbeat thing is pure nonsense: it works one out of two times, just as you'd expect a guess to! (According to it, I'm carrying a boy - scan says otherwise. And my friend is carrying a girl - scan says, very clearly, otherwise!)

eidsvold · 27/08/2006 22:27

heart beats and size were irrelevant for me - dd2 was consistently in the boy region for her heart beat and she was 9lb 7 oz!

madrose · 27/08/2006 22:29

had several mw's and they all said - that's a boy, might be a bit small.

Had DD nearly 10 pounds!

lemonaid · 27/08/2006 22:35

I think she was probably either guessing or more likely just mixing you up with another of her pregnant ladies who does know that she's having a boy. It's not something they even make a note of unless you ask at your scan, so she doesn't have access to any secret sources of information.

IdrisTheDragon · 27/08/2006 22:44

DS's heartrate suggested he'd be a girl and DD's suggested she'd be a boy.

The day before DD was born, I had a sweep and the midwife was saying to me how it would be nice to have two children of the same sex .

So I wouldn't read too much into it.

Devongirl · 30/08/2006 11:38

I know the sex of my baby, so I thought I'd test the midwife - based on heartbeat and the way I am carrying the baby - midwife just said she never believes all the myths and in her long career she has been right 50% of the time! And she got it wrong!

And as long as baby is ok and delivered safely all the rest of it doesn't matter in the long run

Exactly the same for me as Idrithe dragon & Devongirl. Midwife with 30 yrs + experience told me that heartbeat suggested it was a girl. Like you i was annoyed because i wanted the sex to be a surprise. Wrong anyway as i had a boy. Just remember - even Sonographers get it wrong and they can see it on the screen. of course they've got 50 % chance of getting it right but midwives should stop this heartbeat tells the sex mumbo jumbo!!!
