Hi preggies & mums. I'm nearly in tears trying to type this.. I've been on anti acid medication since the age of 19 I'm now 27. I'm 6 weeks pregnant and my doc has taken me off my Altosec 20 (active ingrediant omeprazole) South African tab (I think) anyways I'm not coping! I'm in excruiating pain. I go through 2 liters of milk a day and yogurt gaviscon does nothing for me. I'm struggling to swollow already. Can some1 plz tell me if you took omeprazole from first trimester through to birth and breastfeeding, are you and ur baby safe and normal? Comments will be much appreciated? I'm desperate. Thanks x0x0x0x0x

Hi Christina,
Omiprazole is safe to be used during pregnancy (according to the NHS). There are links between long term antacid medication and an increase risk of gastric infections such as Salmonella so maybe this is what your Dr was concerned about and why he stopped your medication. Please go back to your GP and discuss his rationale for stopping your medication and try and find an alternative. You should not be in that much pain and long-term reflux can cause significant problems to your oesophagus as I am sure you know. Although a bit old now, this thread may help: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/pregnancy/590408-are-any-of-you-blooming-ladies-taking-omeprazole/AllOnOnePage

I hope you get this sorted and good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

I was able to wean myself off Omeprazole for this pregnancy (first few weeks were hell but then my acid reflux seemed to calm), BUT my doctor and the nhs website were both very willing to prescribe me either Omeprazole or ranitidine throughout pregnancy.

I also read many threads on here and other pregnancy sites where mums took both of these throughout without any issues.

Please don't suffer in silence... Constant acid reflux will harm you in other ways and may get worse as the baby gets bigger in the latter stages of pregnancy.

In the meantime you can also try Rennie tablets, but has not done much for me unfortunately.

I've been on them since week 8- now nearly 36 weeks. Do go back to your Dr, it must be hell x

You have all made me feel so much better, thanks a mil. I had tabs left and after reading ur messages I took 1. It will take a few days for me to feel better again. I will have faith that baby will be normal and healthy and carry on with my Altosec 20

I developed reflux at 10 weeks pregnant. Never had before in my life! Gaviscon didnt work, even drinking water left me in pain! GP immediately prescribed omeprazole and have been taking ever since (now nearly 27 weeks). Everything looks fine on scans, and now can eat and drink properly!
Make sure you get your medication, you need to look after yourself to be able to look after that baby!
