how do maternity bras work?

I know this probably sounds stupid but do maternity bras work like normal bras and you buy your new bra size or do they work like maternity clothes and you buy your old size? ( not sure how the latter would work as everyone's boobs grow or don't grow differently in pregnancy but then bumps aren't exactly uniform are they!!!!)

You buy your new size.

and not necessarily maternity bras. There are good sports bras and high support non wired bras that dont come with the price tag that the label maternity comes with ;)

And then there are the people like me who just get normal underwired bras in their new size. 40+6 and still in underwire here...

I'm due with my second baby in 6 weeks and both pregnancies I have worn my normal wired bra's for as long as I can and then as I've got bigger and boobs grown, each time I've gone to m&s to be measured for maternity bra's. I'd recommend m&s! Very comfortable non wired maternity bra's that still support and very reasonably priced . They will measure you for your new size.

I'm dreading this part... I'm 36HH before pregnancy! Some say its a gift from the boob fairy... I hate the boob fairy!
I'm 4+5 and starting to fill the most generous of my bras so only a matter of time before I'm getting refitted!

Another one here who has also bought underwired bras in my new size Got a lovely new pretty pink push up bra for £7 in peacocks today

I get fitted at Bravissimo and wear under wired. Providing the wire isn't pressing on breast tissue, which with a well fitting bra it will not, you're fine to wear your normal wired bras.

Us bigger girls need the support - I wore non wired last time and looked bloody awful.

Wear whatever bras you like (personally I can't be doing with soft bras, neither use nor ornament) but never ever get measured at M&S. They don't know what they're doing. Bravissimo our do it yourself- have a look at the bra intervention threads for instructions.

What I particularly like about Bravissimo is that because it caters very well for the big of boob, there's always someone there larger than I am, quick makes me feel better! I'm a size 10 and have gone from a 30E to a 32G at 28 weeks. Were it not for the bump balancing things out I'd look very unsightly at this point! I do wonder where they'll stop growing, they're like a pair of animals when I take off my bra.

Luckily after my son was born 2.5 years ago they went back to normal, but the photos from that time are not a joy to behold!

But, yes, try Bravissimo, they know what they're doing.

John lewis do great nowired bras for £16. Get measured as you may be surprised how much your size has changed. Your back will probably increased as well as your cup size :)

I stayed in underwired bras and just bought bigger sizes. No matter how good the brand of bra I just didnt feel as supported!

I got measured wrongly and fitted badly at Bravissimo, not once but twice and I'm sorry to say I'm one person who thinks they're not very good. Would highly recommend M&S, who unlike someone said above , do know what they're doing!

Mrsm22 I think your experience with Bravissimo and M&S is exceptional.

Cheshire I'm a similar size to you. I bought a non wired bra and found it super uncomfortable. A normal fitted bra from Bravissimo was loads better. Until I grew out of it.

I think if you aren't used to a proper fit the way Bravissimo do it can feel uncomfortable at first. They will happily take returns and refit until they get it right. M&S still use ye olde add 4 inches system, which leaves you with a band that is too loose to support anything.
