Maternity clothes

Hi everyone

Not got a 'proper' bump yet but my normal clothes are definitely starting to get a bit snug.

I'm trying to plan ahead but I'm struggling to find nice yet affordable maternity wear, particularly for work and special occasions.

Any recommendations gratefully received.

I will be in the same boat in a few weeks. I have seen there are some nice clothes on the New Look site. Need to get a whole new wardrobe for work and pleasure.

SellyMevs · 27/04/2014 14:19

I invested in some nice jeans from H&M, fortunately I can dress quite casual at work. For everything else I pick up bits on ebay for a few quid. I bought a few cardigans because I could wear them unbuttoned and could just wear my normal size. I tend to wear fairly simple t shirts and dress them up a bit if need be. Otherwise I recommend New Look and ASOS.

arwen1506 · 27/04/2014 14:21

I got stuff off asos, though I'm probably in a different position as where I live (Italy) found it difficult to find maternity wear and limited.

littlegreengloworm · 27/04/2014 14:22

I was pg last year and am again, no expert but I bought a lot

For plain work trousers I went to new look
I bought a smart maternity blazer in next
Maternity shirts in H&m

One good black dress from Isabelle Oliver ( was expensive but will wore it a lot and was great for just after baby too.

I bought lots of t shirts in new look, peacocks and then just bought light boyfriend cardis - navy, coral, two white, two black and wore over plain black or white maternity tshirts with a light scarf

Maxi dress - godsend

New look was probably my favourite for linen trousers, Jeans, pjs etc though I threw them out as I wore them every single day and fir six weeks after - they were done.

Nighties - bought a beautiful long black one in marks and spencer and then cheaper ones in Primark.

tablet.hm.com/gb/product/21376?article=21376-A#showSlideshow

This is the type of thing I wore and with smarter trousers for work, then changed the cardi etc to a coral one, it was boring but I felt good enough.

New things that I've bought for my "maternity wardrobe":

2 x black work trousers from New Look maternity (under the bump)

3 x work type tops from New Look maternity, various colours

2 x maternity leggings (one black, one navy), New Look

2 x jumper dresses (knee length sweaters), Sainsbury's, not maternity range, size bigger than I would usually wear (wear these with the leggings)

2 x maternity jeans (one black jeans under the bump, one blue jeans up over the bump), New Look

4 x casual maternity t-shirts from New a Look (eg black and white stripes, grey with lacy collar etc)

2 x Tesco nighties two sizes bigger than I usually wear, not maternity range

1 x "dressy" top from mothercare maternity

1 x casual dress from mothercare maternity

2 x casual dress from New Look maternity (one navy and white stripes, one flowery pattern)

2 pack of breastfeeding vest tops from mothercare maternity

2 x maternity bras from mothercare

2 x maternity bras from primark

Then I still wear baggy pyjama bottoms, baggy tracksuit bottoms, longer/baggier tops, cardigans (particularly long ones), blazer/leather jacket type jackets, longish parka type coat from before.

Am 38 weeks tomorrow, been wearing maternity stuff since around 18 weeks. Reckon I will carry on wearing most if not all of the stuff for a good few months post partum too.

So as you can see New Look has been my go-to-place really! I have one very local though so that explains it. Got a few of the things from there in sales too e.g. the two black work trousers were reduced to £5 each (that's why I got two, to rotate!)

Sorehead · 27/04/2014 15:03

Thanks everyone- I'm going to start trawling through the ASOS and New Look websites now and making a shopping list Grin

I just got my first order of stuff from asos and I'm going to see how I get on with it. I'm chuffed to bits with everything I ordered. Everything fits and everything seems really good quality. The longline short sleeve tunic is very comfy.it's a new look one I think I'll order the black too. The same with the vest top, i got the neon pink in the cheapest one they do and its lovely. I was tempted to send the swimsuit back as I saw one half the price in asda but it looks like it's got a lot of support and I'm not sure I'd get that from an asda one. Leggings are good too as is the skater dress I got. I'm a 12/14 and found the asos sizes a bit more generous than the new look ones. I got the tunic in a 14 but the 12 wouldn't have given me very much growing room! Try and find asos discount codes mine has expired now and take into account the free delivery which is great my order did take nearly 2 weeks to get here though. (also not in uk)

Heatherbell1978 · 27/04/2014 15:33

I've used a mix of New Look, H&M, ASOS and Topshop. Topshop have great work clothes and are a nice fit. I actually found ASOS sizing a bit weird. Ordered a bundle of size 10 stuff and they all fit very differently. Jojo Maman Bebe do great wrap tops. I bought 2 for work and love them. Might be a few more in next few months.

Kels13 · 27/04/2014 15:35

I've just got a lovely few bits from Dorothy Perkins online. They've also got 30% off this weekend! Worth a look!

htbftm · 27/04/2014 15:37

Peacocks and matalan have some nice tops too, and I found a company called Purpless who look like they have some cheap staple items. I'm only in my 8th week, but struggling with my normal wardrobe already. I'm cautious of buying anything until the magic 12 wks tho, but I'm getting more and more uncomfy!

sleepdodger · 27/04/2014 15:47

Work- I lived in topshop Leigh black jeans- they're skinny but smart, with a non black jacket, non mat, and later in a jersey jacket, silky looser tops or smarter jersey tops, statement necklace or scarf, heels and a lot if makeup!!!!
Occasionally for boardroom meetings I'd wear a dress either close fitted heavy jersey (next or topshop) or a swingy 60's dress (non mat topshop) with black opaque mat tights and great heels

For non work I lived in toms, denim skinnies or leggings with long line top and jersey blazer- all hm, topshop or bigger reg size

Jojo feeding stripe top been amazing for friend but after I wore as above but always layered with a vest or bump band so I wasn't exposed tummy

Had a couple of formal doos and wise all saints where the silk goes on forever! Or IO dress which I sold after on eBay for most of what id paid!

RAFWife12 · 27/04/2014 19:27

I got most of my stuff from New Look. I bought some tshirts from Next but not very impressed with them to be honest. For nightwear I have gone with Mothercare.

OhTheDrama · 27/04/2014 19:38

I got some things from Primark and found the fit absolutely awful, it's all going back. Went to Peacocks and got some black linen trousers, 2 plain tops and a check shirt and have to say I'm really impressed! I got a top and a dress from Mamalicious at Amazon for £22 and the quality is lovely. It's worth keeping your eyes open for bargains and discount codes.

ThePrisonerOfAzkaban · 27/04/2014 19:53

I find new look maternity really bad quality. Asos and h&m so far have been good, apart from their jeans which don't fit my fat legs so got a few pairs from next which are doing well.

talulahbelle · 27/04/2014 20:25

I've gone either New Look or second hand from my local Facebook groups, got some lNext maternity tunic dresses for work with leggings, otherwise it's NL maternity jeans and a variety of tops. When the weather picks up I have maxi dresses.

Miriama · 27/04/2014 20:48

I'd try taking a look at Maternity bundles on eBay - I bought about 20 items (dresses, tops, cardies) etc for £30, and bought four pairs or jeans/trousers in the Seraphine Outlet store for around £100. I need to get a jacket though, my mac for work is not fitting me any more! I haven't got on with New Look maternity at all, just doesn't seem to fit properly!

Sorehead · 27/04/2014 20:51

Thanks everyone. I had no idea H&M did maternity wear!

I've found the sizing to be hit and miss with ASOS when I've ordered non-maternity wear Angry

I've got plenty of sites to look through on my lunch breaks this week now!

I recommend gap online for maternity wear Grin

Acorncat · 27/04/2014 21:25

I've ordered stuff online from new look which has been cheap and ok. I checked both my local stores, one had none instore and the other had a rubbish selection with only 1 pair of jeans and yet 3 different pairs of denim hot pants Hmm. I never buy clothes online so finding it all a bit of a faff. I almost bought a hideous dress in H&M today because it was reduced to a £1 for good reason but managed to resist!

I hate how everything seems to be twice the price, it's not like it twice the material. I've bought stretchy normal clothes in a size bigger, hoping that'll do for a few more months (only 21 weeks).

Joanne1987 · 28/04/2014 00:06

At almost 9 weeks I've just bought some really nice maternity clothing from simply be.
