Has anyone else had a lot of ultrasounds? Sonographer worried me!

Hi all -

Have had a bumpy start to my pregnancy as was suspected ectopic to start with, then my GP told me I was likely to miscarry & then, whilst I was in floods of tears and told him I had another hospital appointment, changed his tune and told me "oh, well then wait and see what happens".

Anywhoo after that bumpy start I was being monitored from early on in my pregnancy so I had an internal scan at about 5 weeks to determine the location of the pregnancy (luckily all is growing in the right place!) and then had to come back 2 weeks later at 7 weeks to find the heartbeat (which again, was there. So thankful!). As I suffer from Acute Anxiety Disorder anyway and am managing this via counselling I was understandably very nervous and paid for a private scan yesterday at 9 weeks.

That works out at 3 scans in the space of 6 weeks and the sonographer told me she thinks women should only have 2 ultrasounds in their whole pregnancy as the heat from the ultrasound could cause issues. I'm assuming she means issues with development as opposed to causing miscarriage but this has worried me now. I also have my 12 week scan booked in in three weeks time and am wondering if this is now too many scans!?

Have done some Googling and found people who had difficult pregnancies and needed constant scans but am just wondering if anyone else had a lot of scans in their first trimester?

Am sure am worried bout nothing but as its my first its always lovely to hear reassuring things! Sorry for the long drawn out story too, just didn't want to miss any details!

For my final year project I scanned pregnant cows three times a week for the final two months of pregnancy. As part of the project I had to research risks etc, ultrasonic waves when held over a single position without moving for a considerable length of time so over several minutes can start to cause heating of the tissues. However, this increase in temperature is very small 0.1 to 0.2 of a degree. Experienced ultrasonographer s move the probe around and use the freeze function of the machine to take a snap shot of the image so they can examine it in detail. The machine cache the Moving image to so if you miss the exact frame you can scroll back through the images to find what you are looking for. So the risk doesn't occur with modern machines.
All 15 of my lovely cows gave birth to healthy calves and the entire study was statically significant, got published in peer review journals and is quoted in standard textbooks. Taking this from anecdote to good quality research to put your mind at rest.

excellent post, happy to read proof that scans seem to have no harmful effects.

and just what an interesting thing you did, must have been fun and exciting! Smile

Lone cat, what proportion of the pregnancy is two months? Is it a 7 month gestation? I forget.

I had loads of scans as part of monitoring fro health reasons. One at 6w, 10w, 12w, 20w then another 5 or so. DD absolutely fine.

A fiend of mine had tons for reassurance for a pregnancy following stillbirth. Her consultant told her this was fine. She wouldn't have had them if any risks identified as they were not really required.

I had three scans by 11 weeks, 1 internal and 2 normal. No one said a word about it being dangerous and I went on to have a further 6 without it being mentioned. So don't panic yourself.

Average gestation is 285 days, however, there is a huge amount of variation between breeds. My girl's breed put their gestation at 272 days.
I now scan lots of things my particular favourite is hearts now and I have a super whippy machine that does all kinds of funky stuff.
