Just wanting a moan. My hayfever is back with a vengeance today and I feel terrible, my face is streaky from watering eyes and my nose is gross. It has been the first week of nice weather this year (and probably last knowing edinburgh) i usually take antihistamines but been told not to.
Does anyone have any tips?

BUGGER I thought yesterday and today I was coming down with the cold because my nose won't stop streaming and my eyes hurt, but I feel ok otherwise and of course its bloody hayfever. At least if it was a cold it would be over in a few days!

Awaiting any remedies with interest.

Hello! I've been suffering too so rang the dr the other day and she told me that as I'm well clear of 12 weeks now I can start using allergy nasal spray & eye drops and if those don't work I can start taking my loratadine pills again...totally up to you of course but I know how awful hayfever can make you feel!

I use a nasal douche. They are very common here in Germany, but probably available online in the UK.

Basically it's a bottle with a nozzle at the bottom which you fill with a salt solution and then hold to one nostril. The water flows up one nostril and out the other, washing out all the pollen. You can also increase the pressure by squeezing the bottle slightly so that the water gets up into your sinuses as well and rinses those.

I find it provides instant relief and you can use it up to 3 times a day. Completely safe while pregnant and you get over the gross factor the first time you try it!

The main brands here are Emcur and Emser. You need to buy the salt sachets to mix in the bottle too.

You can use an Olbas inhaler or try some of the nasal balms on offer that stop pollen getting up your nose. If you ask a pharmacist they should be able to recommend one.

Hi,

I only found out I was pregnant with my first on Saturday and was still getting my head round what I could and couldn't eat/do/take when the hayfever kicked in Monday. I tried some Haymax balm on my nose yesterday and it really provided some relief. You should be able to get it in Boots.

Good luck.

Does anyone know if it's ok to use Optrex eyedew drops?

I'm in NZ and this past summer my hayfever was debilitating so I went to the pharmacy and asked what I could take. I was told loradatine was the safest. I think I may have only taken 5 tablets the whole summer but they really worked when I needed them.

mousmous · 17/04/2014 09:19

you can take antihistamines (who told you you can't? lier!)
cetririzine or lortadine are fine.

saranga · 17/04/2014 10:58

Quick response - you can take Loratadine throughout pregnancy and Chlorophanamene Maleate (sp?) - also known as Piriton until the third trimester. The pharmacist will probably say you can't take anything (so don't tell them you are pregnant!) but the NHS website, your GP and midwife will say they are fine.

I'm 31 weeks and taking loratadine for a severe dust mite allergy and I would not have been able to cope with this pregnancy had I not been able to take something. The baby is fine.
