Congratulations on your pregnancy! Thanks Smile

Don't stress too much, some antibiotics are absolutely fine and others are not ideal but are very unlikely to cause major issues in small doses. First of all, can you take the anotbiotics you took to a chemist and ask about them? They will be able to let you know about whether you might want to check with your doctor, and give you some reassurance.

Second, in pregnancy especially but really at any time at all, antibiotics are really only something to take with a prescription, most of the time sore throats are viral anyway and using antibiotics is unnecessary, won't make a difference to your illness and will increase drug resistance. Sorry to go on, but it's my specialist area and a major bugbear!

Hope your throat feels better soon, and that all goes well from here on in!

Give GP a call, presumably that is who prescribed them?

If they weren't prescribed, where the fuck did you get them from?

Lj8893 · 10/04/2014 02:43

Just double check with the doctor who prescribed them.

(Another one who thinks antibiotics is a strange choice of medicine for a site throat, unless you have bacterial tonsillitis?? )

I had 2 courses of antibiotics in pregnancy due to an ear infection. My doctor said that the antibiotics would do much less "damage" than what the stress of the severe pain would cause. Iyswim.

Most antibiotics are safe in pregnancy - check with your dr that what you had was safe.

And yes, sore throats do not normally required antibiotics: they don't work for viruses and at best shorten most bacterial sore throats by 1 day.
I hope you did not take somebody else's meds?

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

@all. I really don't know whether they are antibiotics but I bought them over the counter and the sore throat healed. moreover, I never know I was prego. just missed my period on 8th of april and tested positive yesterday.N/B . I took the drug on 27th march

If they were over the counter it ha unlikely they were antibiotics, but just to be sure I'd definitely check with a pharmacist. Don't worry too much, it's very unlikely to be any kind of problem, hope this isn't ruining your celebrations! Smile

Lj8893 · 10/04/2014 06:10

What were they called?

As far as I'm aware you can't buy antibiotics over the counter so if you let us know what it was you took, then we can let you know if they are safe to use in pregnancy.

FirsttimerG · 10/04/2014 06:47

I take antibiotics daily for an eye problem - just ask your doctor to check if they were safe. Mine are.

Miriama · 10/04/2014 07:38

You cant buy antibiotics over the counter, I'm 18 weeks and have just been prescribed Erythomicin for tonsillitis, doctor said it was perfectly safe during pregnancy. Don't worry too much, if you have just found out, there is literally nothing you can do to change the past, and chances are everything will be fine. Congratulations!

Antibiotics can be bought over the counter in some countries - I take it you are not in the UK?
Your sore throat got better - good. However, if it was better within a day or so of taking the antibiotics it was NOT the ABs making it better, it was just going to get better anyway.
Antibiotic resistance is getting worse and worse worldwide and we are going to run out of effective antibiotic to use (within our lifetime possibly).
Consider for the next sore throat to take regular and effective pain relief, gargle with something and ride it out. The vast majority of sore throats are gone in 7 days without antibiotics and about 1 week with antibiotics Wink

@Thanks for ur concern.
In my country,u can get any type of drug over the counter.
As for the names of the drugs,i have no idea, just asked them to give me some drugs for sore throat and they mixed some tablets.
We are not yet civilized to extent of asking the names of drug we are taking but from now on,I will be asking
@sortofmaybeworried, am a bit worried. wouldn't want to have a deformed baby.
