Agh. Too much weight gain?

I've always been not skinny, but slim - 5'5" and either just under or just over 9st. I've just weighed myself at 29 weeks and I'm 11st 4lbs... Which is way over what NHS says is normal weight gain by the end - and I have 11wks to go!

At what point do I need to worry? I have a pretty healthy diet usually but I'm hungry ALL the time at the moment and I already feel like a whale Sad

My midwife told me that anything up to 3st is a normal gain. I put on 4 from a starting BMI of 21 and no one was worried in the slightest. Most of it was gone within a few weeks, I guess it was fluid etc.

whereisshe · 08/04/2014 00:03

I also read a few scientific studies that showed that eating to appetite with a healthy diet (ie not cake) is best for both baby and mum in terms of a healthy pregnancy. Your body knows what it needs.

livingzuid · 08/04/2014 09:03

I put on a kilo a week and currently am at around a 26kg weight gain. And that is with hg so I really can't eat that much. My consultant isn't phased and thinks much of it is water, although at my 30 week scan the baby is in the 90th percentile!

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I am hoping it will all fall off after the birth!

TKKW · 08/04/2014 09:10

Hi,
Please dont worry. Yes, you've gained but you will lose it. Im no expert but it's prob not just extra fat, its extra fluids, extra blood, you've grown a placenta and of course the baby! I read in my pregnancy manual that weight gain tails off in the last few weeks.
In my first pregnancy I ended up a few stone heavier at the end and with this one (4 weeks to go), Ive gained pretty much the same except i was about 7 pounds heavier to begin with.

PeaceLillyDoge · 08/04/2014 09:14

I put on 3.5 stone due to an addiction to clementines during pregnancy. I tried my best not to eat too much and what I ate was healthy, I was just hungry all the time.

Baby is a month old now and 1.5 stone had come off already. Am hoping to breast feed the rest off and just eat well and take gentle exercise for now. The hunger has gone thankfully!

Honestly, it's not worth worrying about

CountBapula · 08/04/2014 09:17

I gained nearly 3 stone with DS2, who's nearly two weeks old. Turned out he was 10lbs 13oz at birth! Shock

I'm now only a stone over my usual weight, and I expect a lot of that is because of breastfeeding gigantic boobs

Needaninsight · 08/04/2014 09:17

Same here. I've put on 3 stone so far Shock which frightens the hell out of me tbh! I'm normally 9 stone 7, but was 10 stone 5 at the start of this pg (still hadn't lost all my previous pg weight from 10 month old!) ..

So am now 13 stone 5. Could literally cry. Seems enormous to me. Only 3 weeks to go though so hoping I don't get up to 14 stone!!!!

I'll really worry if I'm still hovering around the 11 stone mark in 4 months time eek.

MirandaWest · 08/04/2014 09:19

I put on at least 4.5 stone in both pregnancies and it was fine. Weight came off after they were born.

MaryPoppinsBag · 08/04/2014 09:28

I weighed just over 11st before pregnant with DS1 went up to 15st 10lb lost 3stone of that within 2 months of his birth.

Weighed 12st with DS 2 went up to 16st weighed 12st 10lb 2weeks after he was born.

Since developed an under active thyroid and now weigh a lot more than just after I had my boys. Hmm

Don't worry your weight gain sounds fine.

vichill · 08/04/2014 09:34

I agree that it's not really fat weight gain. I found it fell off post birth quite quickly and I ate loads in the first months of breastfeeding. It was more bloat than wads of fat. I put on 3.5 stone and by the time dd 6 months old I was below pre preg weight.

Linguini · 08/04/2014 09:53

In my pregnancy bible book, it says you should steadily gain weight at a pace that feels natural.
So long as you are gaining the weight through 'good' foods with lots of proteins, vitamins minerals etc, rather than living off cakes and biscuits and sugary foods, then the weight is very easy to lose after the birth.
I am only 1st Trimester and am staaaarving all the time, I eat all day. I know I am gaining lots Just hoping I can lose it just a s quickly after!

Tea1Sugar · 08/04/2014 10:10

I'm 38 weeks and weighed myself today. I'm 11stone eek which means I've put on 2st 10lbs which for me as someone who is very weight conscious probably overly so, is flipping loads.

DemonsInMyHead · 08/04/2014 22:28

Thanks. I feel more normal now!

I'm not sure if you can do anything about it! I'm exactly the same height and weight as you normally. I'm 22 weeks and put on a stone so far. I was pretty surprised as apart from my bump, I look the same and have been eating healthy and exercising. I think nature will just do what it needs to do! I have 3 slim friends who had babies last year and they all put on 3/3.5 stone and all lost it quite quickly!

ilovepowerhoop · 09/04/2014 09:34

when I was pregnant I was told about the 123 rule e.g.

  • if you are overweight to start with aim not to put on more than 1 stone
  • if you are normal weight aim for around 2 stone
  • if you are underweight it can be closer to 3 stone

www.bda.uk.com/foodfacts/pregnancy.pdf - mentions it in here

appletree100 · 09/04/2014 20:10

I just started a new thread on the same subject... oops....

I was also slim before I got pregnant 5'4", 8.5 stone (119 pounds)...

I am currently 23 weeks preggers today. Now I am 142 pounds... that's like a total gain of 23 pounds already - i've still got 4 months to go. I know its vain etc etc... but i'm getting really self concious - my bum is getting large.

I feel much better looking through the above comments xxx i'm going to stop worrying

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 09/04/2014 20:19

I've eaten like a fucking pig - and not healthily - and put on 2 stone (am currently 39.5weeks). I've felt perpetually starving though I do have a pretty active life and have done regular exercise until recently. I know I'll feel constantly hungry until breastfeeding settles down.

RebeccaCloud9 · 09/04/2014 20:25

I was overweight to start with and have eaten loads, almost non stop for the past 8 weeks - weighed myself with dread this morning (12 weeks) and I've lost a pound, how on earth has that happened?! Thought I would have already put on about a stone! Sure I will soon though :(
