I will be having my nursing pillow in the car so that hubby can bring it in.. My back was so painful and hospital didn't had enough pillows (I got 6 of them) so that I could feel comfortable BF my baby. Once home I used the nursing pillow and loved it

Hair bands
Fluffy socks
Peppermint tea.
Cereal bars for energy
Cartons of fruit juice
Cotton wool balls to use with warm water instead of wipes as they can be harsh on a newborns skin.

I second a towel

  • A pen and pad (if you get kept in and want to start recording feeding etc.)
  • A stretchy vest (it was hotter than hades on the ward - I rolled the vest up like a bra top while bed bound)
  • feeding bra? But not essential - everyone looks like crap on maternity.
  • tiny bit of olive oil - put a few drops on baby's bottom and the black tar poo will just slide off rather than taking an age to remove.
  • Tissues. You may do a lot of crying (hopefully all happy hormonal tears!)
  • phone charger is essential! And enough credit/data if you need to post a feeding emergency thread on MN like I did Smile
  • your own pillow. Pillows were like gold dust.

Good luck!

Food! Hospital food is beyond awful, and you'll be there at least 24 hours. Next time I'm going to take a loaf of bread (DH can pick it up for me on the day!), long-life spread like peanut butter, plastic knives, cake, FRUIT and some crisps. I've never been so hungry - all the ladies on the ward afterwards were getting their other halves to bring in takeaways etc, and they had a point!

  • Food and drink - lucozade sport, bonne maman cakes, etc something you can easily bite into and eat quickly. Snacks for your DH too
  • pain killers: paracetamol. It takes sn age to get them prescribed. Best to have your own
  • a small plastic jug to pour water after a wee (helps to heal and less painful)

Btw I had two bags.

1 bag for labour and the one night stay on birthing unit

1 bag if I needed to stay longer incase of C-section or needing to stay in. DH only bought the bag in a day later.
