Just found out I am expecting my 2nd wee bubby, very excited..... but when i was pregnant with DD I developed pre-eclampsia, it was very close to my due date so not great drama really, but I am worried I will get it again and worried it might be earlier in my prenancy, am I being a paranoid hormonal type person (only 6 weeks gone!)or are you more likley to get it again if you had it before?

i was in hospital for 2wks prior to giving birth to my first son with pre eclampsia.20mths later i gave birth to my second son but had no pre eclampsia that time.i think it is usually something you get with first time births so try not too worry as it wont help your blood pressure.id be more wrried bout having a faster birth with your second if there isnt much time since your last.mine was super quick second time round.

congratulations on your pregnancy. i had p-e with my first, fortunately it wasn't a great problem other than the constant in and out of hospital. Had 2nd son 13 months later with no problems, and then DD followed without any problems either, so i don't think it necessarily follows that if you have it once you'll have it again.

Hi

I know a bit about PEt though it's been a few years since I volunteered for the site.

Basically if the Dad is the same the chances of you having PEt (pre-eclmaptic toxaemia) a second time are very low indeed, if the father is diffferent then your chances are theoretically the same as any first time Mother

I ahd severe pre-eclampsia that caused my DS1 to be born with IUGR (intra uterine growth retardation) and he has autistic spectrum disorder, which I personally believe is linked to a badly managed birth and PG, however DS2 was born 13.5 months later and ds3 a few years after that with no signs of PEt, although I was monitored closely with DS2, having scans that measured the blood flow to the placenta regularly. My sister had severe PEt also, and has been advised to have no more children, but she still takes bp medication 3 years after.

Some sites I would recommend are APEC ( type in APEC pre eclampsia and the search will find it)and PETS (pre-eclampsia and toxaemia support)(the first for info, the second for peer support, the second is the one I am on the committee of). I will find the links for you

Hi sissyspacek, I had pre-eclampsia too when I had our son 21 months ago. I got to week 35 without any problems then developed it but as the girls have said it doesn't have to mean you'll get it again! I know it's not easy but try not to think about it too much or you'll put more unnecessary pressure on yourself and will wish you had'nt when the little one arrives as it's a precious time!
Will pray all goes well for you hun!

sissy - congratulations

I had late onset PE with number one and worried myself sick through pregnancy number two. In the end I got gestational diabetes instead! Everyone I spoke to said that the chances of getting PE with the second pregnancy were dramatically lower than with the first. However, I did insist on extra checks and was a real pain in the arse on that count - but it made me feel loads better . In the final week my bloods did start going a bit funny again but it happened even later than in first pregnancy and my bp was fine. Have you got a sympathetic doctor/midwife who will see you on a more regular basis just for reassurance sake?

sissyspacek · 19/08/2006 10:15

Not seen the MW yet waiting for her to call me still but will ask if I can have extra checks, many thanks for your help and the links you have all put my mind at ease and my dh's to !

Get the extra checks and if you feel ill, do mention it. I had a fluey feeling at about 30 weeks with ds2, spoke to the GP, who said nothing to worry about.... hec checked my notes and next thing I knew MW was banging on my door just in case, to do a check! They do take care of you, honest
