advice/experiences of travel in late pregnancy please...

Hi - I am due 30th March and I'm planning on travelling by train from South East to Midlands (changing once via London Underground) tomorrow and dh will bring me back at w/end. The midwife says the baby's head isn't engaged at all and said it was fine to go as long as I don't mind having the baby in Nottingham (which I don't). I feel a bit nervous using the undergound so late in pregnancy though. Did any one travel this late in pregnancy on the train/ does anyone think it's a very bad idea?!!

You'll be fine as long as you allow plenty of time for your journey and stay calm. Take a cold drink and some biccys and a magazine. Don't worry and good luck on the 30th

I'm flying back from Spain at 31.5 weeks so I've got my fingers crossed too!!

I'd make sure you get an aisle seat, and move around as much as you can (safely obviously!) and avoid anything vaguely rush houry..people are pigs, even when you're pregnant

I'll be commuting into London up until 36 weeks, I'm spared the Underground but still need to use packed commuter buses no fun at the best of times.

Have also booked to got to New York at 27 weeks, should be OK I think. DPs birthday present 2 months early!

I would love to able to travel in my 4 weeks before the birth as all my friends live quite a distance away, I think I will have to content myself with chatting online though .

sweet kitty - have you got insurance - I had a devil of a job finding someone to insure me to fly after 26 weeks

The only one I found was Churchill - they were very reasonable and will fly you up to 7 months exactly - have a good time

Ha ha - on train yesterday looked a bit peaky - someone asked if I was alright and wanted the window open - I said very loudly that it was just morning sickness - had 3 people offer me their seat - hoorah!!

Hi everyone - just spoke to my mum on phone and she suggested getting a taxi from charing cross to st pancras - anyone any idea of how much that would cost? She said she'd reimburse....

I'd say about a tenner, but have at least 20 with you just in case. depends on the time of day, as the strand can get v clogged up. it's probably a bit quicker on the tube if you can bear it.

I think I'll try for the tube as have been getting travel sick in cars!! Thanks for info tho - should hit London round about lunchtime so tube shouldn't be too busy. Reason for trip home is cos my sister had a baby last week but her stitches got infected and she's been in hospital for a week and tomorrow they are taking her into theatre. Anyone any experience of anything like this? Apparently the midwives didn't check her everyday - I thought that was standard preactice?

I would get a taxi too to be honest - it should only be about £10 then you don't have to battle the escalators.

Don't worry once my bump is really big I will be standing for no one!

Def get the tube, you'll get a seat no problem!

I was getting the tube/train into Central London and driving London to Oxford and back in a day regularly until I was 37 weeks. Unless you feel unwell there shouldn't be a prob

(didn't mean was going into C london AND driving to oxford and back all in one day btw!)

Also, at least it's cool - It was August when I was doing it and about a billion degrees yeuch!

I'm due 31 March and am catching the tube everyday to work in rush hour. I haven't had any problem but then it is quite normal for me so I'm sure that makes a difference to comfort levels. Do what you feel most comfortable doing?
I flew to New York at 23 weeks, wouldn't recommend going without travel insurance as if for some reason you need to go to hospital it will cost a small fortune.

Travelling is fine of the tume, travelled in London until 39 weeks - I think people move out your way because they don't normally see people at that late stage so are shocked at how big you may be.

Lunch time should be quiet. Good luck with your trip and hope that your sister is getting better, I know how she feels.

Norwich Union insures up to 28 weeks. I bought insurance today for my trip to Japan on Saturday. I will be 23 weeks on the trip back.

I think there are some buses that go direct from Charing Cross to St Pancras. If you want I will check for you tomorrow.

sweetkitty, LloydsTSB do travel insurance and will insure you up to 32 weeks (definatly 28weeks without Drs certificate)

Thanks for all your messages - got there and back safe and sound - worrying about nothing as usual! Udar - is your babies head engaged yet? Midwife said mine hasn't at all yet. Does anyone know if that makes me more likely to be overdue/need to be induced/have caesarean? TIA

No the head hasn't engaged yet. No idea if it makes any difference to the birth - hope not. It is in head down bottom out position which is a good start. It is just a waiting game now isn't it.

Hi Udar. Went to midwife today and she said next appointment would be at the hospital a week on Thursday as would be a week overdue by then. Wondering what will happen there - do you think they will give me a sweep or do they just check you over and book a sweep for another date? Baby's head still not engaged!! She thinks he might be slightly back-to-back too...

Did you see the baby that was born on a Virgin flight at 36 weeks? (They have called her Virginia and she gets free flights until she's 21 apparently!)
