Colposcopy in pregnancy.... Very nervous!!! :/

I'm due to have a colposcopy done at 29 weeks and I'm worried its going to cause early labour or something?? Has anyone else had this done during pregnancy and was everything ok?? Part of me wants to cancel it till after baby arrives but I don't want to risk anything with my health in terms of not having it done??? Looking for some reassurance I think!!!! :) thank you x

They will be very careful don't worry, if any treatment is needed they will wait until after pregnancy I think

Helly I thought the same? I had regular colposcopys before falling pregnant and was told to rebook after having the baby?

Yeah I was due a smear but fell,pregnant and they won't do it now til after baby born and I have a history of abnormal smears!!!

See I've read a few things about people being told to wait till after baby's born, but I've been booked in. Was originally due last year but had a miscarriage so the wouldn't do it.... Then I fell pregnant and they've booked me in for 6months pregnant. Last thing I want is to ruin what's been a very good pregnancy.... I'm tempted to ring and postpone appt by a few weeks, just so I could b that little further along but not irresponsible and not have it done at all?? Sure they wouldn't make u go in and have it done if it was risky... They must do them on pregnant women a lot surely??

I had one at 36 weeks on a Monday afternoon (I'd had heavy unexplained bleeding and speculum examination revealed something unusual on my cervix). The guy doing it told me that all was well and that my cervix was thinning nicely and to expect a baby soon. My waters broke on the Friday night and DS2 was born early on the Saturday morning!

This may sound weird but do they know you're pregnant? I had to cancel my appts when they sent it through. MW told me to tell them that I was pregnant and call back after?
Find out from MW what she wants?

Yeah they do know as it was hospital that saw me when I was around 14 ish weeks and said they would book me in for a colposcopy (I had cin2/3 back in April last year and this is simply follow up to make sure ok as I had leep etc done)... I think I would feel happier getting it done at 30 something weeks like the lady above so if she did come, it wouldn't be 'too early'??

I had when booked when pregnancy with my DD and I was told to rebook for when she was at least 3 months old.

another one here who was due a colposcopy and was told they would do it after baby was born.

I needed one as a follow up as I had one last yr.

I would get a second opinion before getting it done.

I'd recommend calling them. A lot of the time they don't check for these things

just had a quick google. not much on nhs website but cancer research site says normally you would be told to wait til after baby is born but depending on your current results or results history you may be advised to hav a colposcopy while pregnant. it does say it's safe...

However if it were me I would be looking for a lot more info on the risks of having it v waiting before I made a decision.

I think there might be some confusion over the treatments, colposcopy is them just looking. Biopsies, lletz, loops etc all fall under treatment and further action and I expect it's highly doubtful they would do these. A colposcopy is just them having a good look with a microscope, no more invasive (maybe less) than a speculum and swab. It's what is needed afterwards that would be reconsidered taking pregnancy into account

They will take a look but wont do anything further until after baby is born.
I'm awaiting treatment for cell abnormalities found at my examination but because the treatment itself is rather invasive they suggested I wait.

I had c1n3 before I got pregnant and was supposed to have my follow up smear when I was 6 months pregnant. I rang the hospital and they cancelled it and I went yesterday dd is 6 months old
really didn't think they did anything like this when pregnant

I'm due to have one in pregnancy too. I was in the middle of IVF when my recall appointment came through, and it worked, so I was then pg. I've been told to book between 32 and 34 weeks. My consultant says that he sees a lot of women in pregnancy.

My last colposcopy needed no treatment but a yearly checkup. I explained we would then try to concieve. Luckily we managed to and bubs is due a month after my next checkup so est 36 weeks. They told me IF I did fall pg before checkup they would wait until baby is three months old as the cervix cells change during labour etc.

Obviously it depends on previous history for you but a colposcopy is perfectly safe in pregnancy, its any treatment that may be deferred.

Thank you for all your comments :) I've had to move my appt as it was right on school run and hubby isn't around on that day 2help, so the next one they could give me was 3weeks later. This in itself made me feel better as its a few weeks further along and I've since read on nhs website that they say colposcopys are safe in pregnancy... I'm sure they wouldn't get me in if it wasn't safe?

I saw a girl on 'this morning' today who was diagnosed with terminal cervical cancer, and it made me think that maybe it was a sign I shouldn't cancel my appt, I don't want to be irresponsible and not go if they think I should. I will just make it clear i don't want anything more than looking done!!

I sat and cried 2!! So sad..... wen I got told I had CIN 3 the gynogologist scared me so much but telling me it would turn info cancer if I didn't get it treated etc.... It just scares me senseless when I see things like that as I dont want that 2happen... I don't usually cry at anything in the telly but that got me! It made me realise i need 2b sensible and just go and at least have things looked it, as theyll b able 2c if anything bads going on Xx
