Cervical ectropion

Im 22+3 and last night I had quite a nasty bleed. After 4 hours at the Labour Ward I was advised I had a cervical ectropion. I'm determined not to use Dr Google but I wanted to ask about others experiences of this.

I've been advised I need to be seen for every bleed and i'll be prone to them throughout the rest of my pregnancy. Although I've not been told I can't have sex, I've been warned this will most likely result in a bleed. The thought of no sex for another 18ish weeks fills me with dread!

It means some mucusy/internal/very thin skin from the 'inside' of your womb grows on the outside. It's extra and grows on top of an otherwise normal cervix. The bleeding arises from this thin skin being strained or touched (hence sex can cause a bleed). Some people call it cervical erosion. I have had it since I came off the pill (bloody scary as I have an unrelated condition making me prone to miscarriage and I'm on blood thinners). have had 2 bleeds in 14 weeks, both times they just checked me over at the hospital and all was OK.

Your cervix still works properly. :)

It is relatively common in pregnancy, and can also be triggered by things like coming off the pill or simply hormones.

Any bleed in pregnancy needs to be checked: I think they don't want anyone to mistake a serious bleed because 'it happens all the time' boy-who-cried-wolf style. Hence their warning.

I've got this, common after years on hormonal contraception apparently. In my first pregnancy it caused several small bleeding episodes and was pretty stressful. Things like a big poo, overdoing it and yes, sex not that I'd know can set it off. Oh, and internals definitely do.

Strangely it hasn't been an issue this time, though it does cause a LOT of discharge.

They will generally always advise getting checked out but I did find the bedside manner a bit lacking as it was always down to the erosion for me.
