Threatened Miscarriage - continued bleeding - Any info?

Hi all

Just wondering if anyone could help... Not really had a lot of information from the hospital...

I experienced a big bleed at 10 weeks.(after going to see my MW - as i was experiencing bad cramps and sickness - she then gave me an internal swap to determine if I had an infection) I was taken to my local hospital, where they just left me to bleed for a couple of hrs. The doctor (who clearly had little experience) felt my stomach and completed an examination, and said that my cervix was closed. We then had to wait another couple of hrs for a scan (my husband had to complain for a while to get this)... When I had the scan they found the baby with a strong heartbeat and moving!! very unexpected... We were given no explaination and told to go home and rest... I was told to come back if the bleeding became very heavy again and clots. After a week of cramps and bleeding (but it did go brownish) I went back to the hosiptal. They gave me another scan and the baby was still moving and stong heartbeat.... But she said she knew what the bleeding was - it was a threatened miscarriage - There is a clear bleed within my womb.... I was told to go home for 2 weeks and rest... And again return to the hospital if experiencing fresh blood/heavy bleeding or clots.
So we are nearly at week 2 when this started... scared to move... and total panick stricken.... I am still bleeding...and have bad cramps daily... I dont have another scan for 9 days.... Does anyone know anything about this? Could I have this for the total 40 weeks?

Thanks in advance for your help

poor you. Can you have another scan before if you are worried? Is there a chance you miscarried a baby and were having twins? This happened to my mum

rahrah1 · 13/08/2006 17:20

Thanks for the tips - will send my husband to boots tomorrow!! Cheers

The sister at the EPU said that she wanted me to rest for 2 weeks and then have another scan. She said the best thing to do is relax and rest... to try and slow the bleeding down.... need to avoid clots etc.... They have not offered a possible twin as an explaination, they have just said that it is what they call a threatened miscarriage (although quite a few of my family and friends have said the same as you). I have been refered to a consultant, but they have sent a letter to advise the next appointment is on the 26th Sept... (no comment) Basically everytime I have been in contact with the hospital they advise there is nothing they can do and fingers crossed

Well I wish you well. I dont suppose there is anything they can do, but waiting is no fun! You reall do have to rest. Is this your first baby?

I have been in this situation. Intermittant bleeding of varying amounts including clots. Scans every 2 weeks showed baby developing normally. No explanation for the bleeding. I rested whenever I could. It settled down between 16 and 20weeks. No bleeding at all after approx 21weeks. Think once the placenta fully took over the bleeding settled. Pregnancy continued without problems after that. Went 10days o/d. Labour from 1st pain to delivery 1.5hrs. Baby normal and is now 9 years old with no problems. I have bled in first trimester to different degrees with all my pregnancies (apart from one which m/c).
Wishing you well with this one. I know what a nightmare it is feeling like you are living on a knife edge from scan to scan. Hope it settles down soon for you.

Thanks Auntymandy - yes its my first....

Thanks Juuule - wow 9 yrs old... thats great and the delivery does not sound half bad!

How many weeks were you when you stopped having 2 weekly scans?

Your message has made me really positive - thanks X

From 7 weeks I had scans 2-weekly until 12 weeks, then around 16 and 20weeks. By the time I was 14weeks the heartbeat could be heard on sonicaid so scan not as necessary. At 22wks I had the anomaly scan that everyone has. After that things had settled. Once I could feel regular movements I was reassured by those. Those scans in the early days were invaluable for my peace of mind.
Also with another of my pregnancies I had a heavy bleed at 12+wks caused by a bleed behind the placenta. Thankfully it didn't get any worse and that pregnancy went to term. I did rest when I could with that in the hope that it would be of benefit. I would advise you to rest as much as you can at this point in time until everything settles down.

Thanks Juule - much appreciated.

how are things now?

HellKat · 16/08/2006 10:16

Hi Rah,
Hope the bleeding's eased by now for you.
I've bled with all of my pg's (7 in total, 4 were m/c's). My recent pg was deemed as high risk of m/c as I bled very heavily for 26 days out of 30. I had clots, flooding & cramping & was told everytime that I went to the epu, to prepare for the worst. It turned out to be excess womb lining that had "over protected" the baby. This had to be shed (like a normal period) so hence all the bleeding. The outcome of this pg is a healthy (but 7wks early) little dd.
My last pg ended in m/c & that was all "old" blood, lots of brown etc, no pain. This was a missed m/c. I always thought that bright red bleeding, pain etc meant m/c but brown loss was ok. Goes to show you just never know. (Previous m/c's were painful with bright bleeding).
The only advice i can say offer is try to rest as much possible & prepare youself for any outcome.
Wishing you all the luck in the world.

Hellcat what do you mean by flooding?

LovelyAngel · 17/08/2006 06:49

Hello,
I am 7 weeks and 2 days and have been bleeding for 5 days, its dark and I cant call it brown with pain, but yesterday there was a small thing like tissue that came out, I panicked so much but anyway managed to sleep throught the night, I am going to hospital now and hope things will be fine this is my first and messages here have made me feel much better, I hope my baby is fine.

Auntymandy · 17/08/2006 07:13

hope everything is ok.

julezboo · 17/08/2006 14:05

I too had a bleed in the womb, just to the side of the pregnancy sac, was told to go home a rest, had 2 weekly scans, Had my 13 weeks scan yesterday, bleed has resolved itself and baby is measuring 2 days ahead. They did say the bleed will most likely be gone by 20 weeks though.

Ill keep my fingers crossed for you honeyx x

mrspf · 25/08/2006 15:48

It is heartening to read that not all bleeds result in miscarriage, although I guess I should prepare myself for the worst case scenario too. I started bleeding on Wednesday morning, no pain at first, but then cramps started Weds evening, and I passed one largish (1 inch long) clot. The pain subsided, but I am still bleeding but not heavily anymore. I can't get scanned until next Thurs when I will be 6 weeks, so I just have to wait. I am sure that I have miscarried (my early pregnancy signs all disappeared prior to the bleeding), and just want to go back to work and take my mind off things before next Thursdays scan. Any advice from anyone who's been in a similar position?

julezboo · 25/08/2006 16:00

mrspf

Im sorry you are going through this, its just awful!

I bled from just over 5 weeks, had no symptoms and convinced myself too I miscarried, stopped my daily injections even that i was on to keep the pregnancy going. I felt awful for giving up hope 3 days later when i had my scan at 6 weeks and baby was fine.

Im 15 weeks on monday, although my bleed has resolved itself i still have spotting every few days x x

Take care and good luck for your scan next week x x

whitedaisy · 05/09/2006 20:43

Hi. I'm 5 weeks 3 days. today I started with bad cramps and bright red bleeding although not extremely heavy. Scan in 2 days time. CONVINCED this is a miscarriage.
