Rhesus Negative

What are your experiences? I got a letter this morning with an information leaflet.

It mentions bleeding and trauma. What do they class as trauma?! And what are your experiences of birth etc?

I'm rhesus negative and never had any problems, just had anti d jabs later in pregnancy, used to be two at around 28 and 34 weeks I think) but now I think it's just one jab in your bum

I'm 34 weeks and have had 1 anti D jab at 28 weeks and no mention of me needing another one pre-birth. Mine was in my arm not my bum

Maybe it's changed with my 2nd and 3rd pregnancies (9 and7 years ago) I def had two jabs in bum!

This time midwife has already told me it's only one jab, I just presumed in bum but hopefully it has now changed to arm

I was Rhesus negative! I had an extra jab as I had a bleed at 13 weeks, but apart from that, it was just a couple of injections towards the end.

The trauma thin is that basically if anything happens that means there's even a tiny chance of your blood mixing with the babies they need to be aware - hence me having the first injection so early!

I went overdue and ended up with an induced and assisted birth but I don't think my R- status had anything to do with it!

It's fine, I hate needles (more when they take blood for some reason) but its a quick jab I remember it being two in previous pregnancies but think its 1 at 28 weeks now. It's to prevent your body detecting +ve blood (possibly from baby) and learning to fight it, it's more to protect future pregnancies ending in mc I believe. Xx

I had one at villio and then one after birth I think that was in my thigh I honestly can't remember.
With dd2 they gave me another along the line but I can't remember when . However I had it written in red on my notes ...

Now it's one at 28 weeks (mine was in my arm, but can't guarantee it's there for everyone!) and extra if you have a bleed. Trauma, I think, has to be a quite a hard hit/bump - like a fall or car bump, but I've heard of lots of people ringing triage to check after minor bumps, like children or animals jumping on bumps etc.

After the birth, if baby is rhesus positive, you'll have a second injection. Nothing if baby is negative.

It won't affect labour and shouldn't affect this or further pregnancies in anyway - rhesus incompatibility used to be a big problem, but since the 60's, if you get the jabs, is unheard of.

I had injection at 28 wks or so, no other needed. Children needed to be tested at birth for their blood type, no injection. that means they were negative? think so.

oh, and no complications other than retained placenta in first birth but nothing to do with blood types.

I'm rhesus neg too, I'm 27 weeks and so far have had three anti-D injections, one for ableed at 14 weeks, one as I tripped and fell over at 24 weeks, and the routine one at 27/28 weeks.
I was told that if you fall over, or knock your bump, or have any bleeding,or any potential bruising/internal bleeding then you need to call the maternity assessment unit and they will get you in and do blood tests to see if you need extra anti-D, I've needed the extra both times.
The injection itself is fine, no worse than having any other vaccinations and mine have all been done in my upper arm/shoulder.

I'm rhesus neg, DH is positive but all 3 pregnancies/births fine. Had jab when pregnant and another (in the thigh) after each birth.

I am rhesus negative but so is dh so I didn't have anti d jabs.

my EXH was negative to but they still made me have the anti d's with my 3 pregnancies because they said that as they do not test the father they can't be sure

I was rhesus negative. Oh is positive. I had an injection at 28 weeks and as dd came out positive I had another one straight away.
Neither of us had any health problems.

Thanks for your replies. I already have the added complication of a bleeding disorder so I was already high risk. The leaflet was a bit vague and didn't really say much about what they thought was trauma. Does it count toddlers landing on your belly?! Or more serious falls etc?

Wow I am rhesus negative I had the anti-d injection during pregnancy (in my arm I was given the choice) and another after birth as my dd is posotive but I was never told a bleed or fall during pregnancy could be a risk, I realise now I am very lucky that I didn't harm myself as I wouldn't have known it was a risk factor. If we still lived in the same town as where I gave birth I think I would go in and tell them I didn't know this as it sounds like it can be dangerous!
