Hi,

I have been referred to the obstetrics clinic at the hospital and I was wondering if anybody could tell me what to expect?

Also should I make my appointment for after my first scan which is next week?

what's the referral for Shanks?

My midwife sad I would be referred to a consultant because Im overweight and at the time I had elevated blood pressure. She said it was because of the risk of gestational diabetes.
Akthough Im not too sure if this is that referral or just an appointment to visit the clinic.

I think in most areas you wouldn't normally expect to go to obstetrics for routine appts. I didn't in my first pg, I just saw the MW at the GP's surgery until I went overdue.

So I guess this appt is that referral.

It can't hurt to wait till after the scan, I don't think. I imagine they'll want to take a urine sample and maybe blood samples to test for GD, but I haven't had this myself.

Am sure someone with more experience will be along soon

I saw an obs twice with my last pg
You'll probably have to hang about at the clinic, someone will weigh you and eventually you'll see a doc who'll talk to you about your weight/bp

They might just decide you need further monitoring which might be seeing the MW more often or seeing the obs again later on in your pg

Definitely wait until after the scan. I've always been refered to obs (though always ended up having midwife-led care and giving birth with only midwives present) as I'm overweight and have a fibroid. They always ask about the scan, and in any case it's a lovely experience, so if you're worried about the obs appointment, then it's nice to have seen the scan and the reassuring heartbeat and movement. FWIW, although I am severely overweight (technically, obese) I have not had GD in any pregnancy. Towards the end of the pg my sugar levels do rise, but I've not tested positive for GD and have been able to deal with it by diet alone. My babies, though big, were big and healthy, not fat from excess glucose. The obs appointments are just like any other a-n appointment, only with a dr rather than a midwife.
