Ok so call me Boring if you like but i love the color white Confused i think its easy to wash no worrying about colors running or decals fading or coming off etc etc BUT i was wondering if there is any one else out there like me who thinks the same it seems if i dress my my child in all white babygro's for the first 12 months or until walking age then i might seem a tad weird lol also i think babies should'nt be dressed in bright colours and weird outfits anyway its kinda like turning them into an accessory when i see babies in bright clothes and those annoying cloth shoes (which are so pointless) i just think well why dont you just put a couple of handles on your baby and tote them around like a handbag may aswell lol am i the only one who thinks this way babies just look so cute and scrummy by themselves they dont need anything else to make them cute IMO......discuss Brew Cake Thanks

Next sleepsuits are lovely! I have been buying plain white bodysuits at m&s. I buy 7 in each size and DS wears them again and again. They last really well.

I love DS in white but once he grew up a little I liked putting him in things with a bit of character. He is 6 months and only just wearing anything denim or 'grown up'. I wanted to preserve his babyness as long as possible and stuck to jersey onesies and dungaree sets Grin

SoftSheen · 27/02/2014 21:00

I like small babies in white but once they start crawling and eating food then white just isn't practical. We had more than one white babygrow ruined by banana stains (which strangely, are a blueish black colour).

LMH20 · 27/02/2014 21:46

I walk around nude Blush haha and i have heard about the scratch mitts dramas so defiantly want ones with built in scratch mitts they are like gold dust to find though apparently i though it would be standard design to have built in mitts up until 4-5months

If the white clothes get stained and we're told to use only non-bio detergent for babies clothes, how do you get the stains out? Doesn't using bleach/vanish etc irritate baby's skin?

NearTheWindymill · 27/02/2014 22:17

Um plain white shows the sicky stains and the puree stains and all the little bits of grub they pick up once they start moving. I agreed with you until I had a baby and then I sort of bought into patterns Grin

Mrswellyboot · 27/02/2014 22:19

I dressed out baby in white to.. Up until about three months. To be honest you will get so many outfits! You might not need to buy anything until 12 months

DailyBread · 27/02/2014 22:19

Oh god OP I am exactly the same about white! Get yourself to the White Company. Their stuff is like Wimbledon, predominantly white with a little colour if necessary. And only delicate blues and pinks after that because you might get bored of just white after a while.

But yes, I also don't like bright colours on babies - thought it was just me who thought my baby was too delicate for colour! Grin

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 27/02/2014 22:22

banana is the WORST! Confused

MyNameIsKenAdams · 27/02/2014 22:24

Next all have built in mitts and whilst they do generally have silly frilly designs, they do have rare gems of bloco colour, stripes and spots. We bought most of dds sleepsuits from there til she hit 1.

Daytime wear we started at about seven months and got from h&m as ot really is very plain and simple.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 27/02/2014 22:26

My favourite outfit from DD1 which I've got all ready for DD2 is a gorgeous black velvet all in one with tiny white polkadots with matching a hat and slippers.
Its soo sweet. My dear departed Granny nearly had a coronary when she saw it. Grin

steppemum · 27/02/2014 22:38

to be honest, you sound like you want to have a beautiful pristine white baby as an accessory!

You may find
-that your baby's skin tone looks absolutely dreadful in white (as 2 of mine did) but then again, then may also look dreadful in any other particular colour)
-that your baby's shape may not suit babygros - we gave up at about 4 months as we would have needed 2 sizes larger to accommodate ds long feet.

  • that if you have a baby who spits up all the time all your clothes will be covered with stains, no matter how much you instantly soak and love laundry. If you do wash at very high temperatures, the clothes will either shrink or become less stretchy.

Scratch mitts are not actually recommended by the way, babies should be encouraged to find their hands.

MyNameIsKenAdams · 27/02/2014 22:39

Didnt know that about scratchmitts - have you got a link?

steppemum · 27/02/2014 22:55

sorry, no link. I bought them for the hospital bag, because they were on the list and midwife looked a bit sniffy and then next morning the midwife told me don't leave them on too long, baby needs to find their hands, let the feel their fingers and so on. HV said the same at home. The ones I got were too small for my big babies anyway, so I chucked them. 3 babies later, wonder why I wasted my money.

steppemum · 27/02/2014 22:58

and some babies look best in plain navy blue or dark red or even baby pink.

Sid77 · 27/02/2014 23:06

I started with all white baby clothes as we didn't know the sex. When DS1 arrived I got bored very quickly of white! It made him look washed out and a bit like he was a little dentist. I got some brightly coloured baby grows and they suited him so much better, it immediately made me more cheerful!! Just my experience - I agree that they should be in baby grows for as long as possible though. Proper clothes just look uncomfortable.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 27/02/2014 23:11

Agreed. And if they are particularly yellow, white REALLY makes them look worse! Confused

Artandco · 27/02/2014 23:13

Ours both wore just white babygrows for about 9 months solidly, then to 18months when potty trained half the time.

How do everyone's get so dirty? The best thing about them was could all go in together on high wash and get rid of any dirt. They wore a long sleeve bib when they ate so hardly covered in tomato sauce. Lasted x2 children and passed them on to friend and look as new

firstchoice · 27/02/2014 23:26

my ds had reflux really really badly and trying to get him dressed was horrible - if you bent him / sat him up / laid him down he puked so he was openbottomed babygros till he crawled then ordinary babygros.
We could get through about 12-15 per DAY so I just bought 4 dozen white and boil washed them all Grin
dd was less refluxy but still couldn't abide clothes with zips/ buttons down back/ stiff waistbands etc (she'd puke with them).

So, yes, white babygros for both for about the first year I think.
Real 'clothes' were a rare occurrence.

White Co stuff is luffly but expensive.

steppemum · 27/02/2014 23:27

how do they get dirty?

cuddling/sitting on my lap in jeans
rolling/ wriggling/sitting on the carpet
crawling - Oh my goodness they were just filthy all the time, and yes my house was clean, but especially dc 2 and 3 with older kids in the house.
eating. even with bibs, they got mucky at the collar, they fed them selves and I let them, so they got messy.

and spit up. ds spit up milk, and then when weaning spit up everything. So unless he was wearing the bib 24/7 he got food all down his front when he spit up.

And it is great of your kids fit into babygros, but as I said ds was wrong shape, and my friend's dd was all leg and short body and to get the length, she would have been drowned in the top half.

Each to his own, the baby doesn't care, I would just caution against buying too much as you may change your mind.

LMH20 · 28/02/2014 01:22

If baby is getting dirty then there is something dirty and germy in your house they are getting dirty from dirt doesnt just magically appear :/ drool and sick yes that makes them messy but not so filthy you cant get them clean and i think using bleach vanish etc lots of rinse washes would get rid of all residues and traces of anything as for them not staying white or stains not being removed oh well just buy a couple more there practial and inexpesive

Jeans imo are rough and scratchy baby skin is like tender tissue paper so would jeans material rub against them

LMH20 · 28/02/2014 01:26

How can you think your babies skin tones looks terrible in white or terrible at all for that matter :( ??

OP posts:
SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 28/02/2014 01:50

You have obviously never been in receipt of a 'poonami'! Hmm
Or a mashed banana, or a jar of Heinz chocolate pudding, or a multitude of other things that babies get covered in.
As for being dirty and germy, every house has some dirt! My mother's house is white from top to bottom and cleaned daily. Doesn't mean that there's no dirt or dust.
I'm assuming that this is your first child. I'd keep an open mind if I was you.

LMH20 · 28/02/2014 02:59

MY house doesnt its steam cleaned daily and the whole reason i want white clothes as other posters have agreed with me is to stick them on a boil wash and not worrying about damaging them because they're funny colored or covered in plastic decals i could never stick my boy in denim ever or let him get dirty from a floor or anything and if he did get covered in slobber and homemade baby food then i can whip his clothes off in a flash and wash them straight away and he can go through as many as he wants because there easily bought and cheap as i said before its a baby not a fashion accessory or a dolly babies are messy yes and they are all cute too they don't need fancy frills or clobber more trouble than its worth IMO parenting is only as hard as you make it im not arguing im just saying

Mothercare multipacks of white babygrows are the best. DS' went through his cousin and are now on DD. Softer than any other brand (I'm usually a big John Lewis fan, so was surprised) and immaculate still. Very much recommend!

Little smocked dresses for under 4s are cheap as chips on Ebay and usually as new, because they were only worn for special occasions. I have a silk hand smocked Bonpoint Broid Main dress in pale pink I got for a tenner (admittedly it was badly listed!). Also some classic Heskia ones. Try there?
