Americans reckon we should all be taking 5mg folic acid - can that be right?

I just started a thread over on the conception board about 5mg now being the dose of folic acid Americans are advised to take, because 400ug only gives 47% reduction in risk of neural tube defects.

Wasn't sure whether to post here or there…so here's the linky if you're interested...

When you look at the research you see that a lot of it contradicts each other. A lot of research even says that it's probably a waste of time taking any folic acid at all! And that genetics plays a bigger role in risk of defects like these. I would say, just do your own reading up on things and make your own decision :)
