7wks. Yolk sac and 2 mm embryo but no heartbeat? :(

Hi everyone

I had a scan at the EPU today which showed a yolk sac and a 2mm embryo but no heartbeat yet (nurse said embryo was too small).

Has anyone else experienced this?

If you're 100% certain on dates (e.g. IVF, or you are experienced with charting) then it may not be great news - BUT - if there is any uncertainty then you are still very much in the game. What you saw today is "average" for around 5+6, so a day under 6 weeks. Scans at this stage are +/- 5 days so there's a lot of room. And for starters it is not expected to see a heartbeat on an embryo under 3-5mm I think - if the embryo was 6mm long I'd be a lot less optimistic.

Sometimes people can have retroverted uteruses that hide what is there too, but this is quite rare.

Unfortunately I suspect only time will tell, and waiting goes so slowly! When will you be rescanned? A week should be enough time to get a clearer picture.

We dtd on day 16 and day 24. My cycle is always spot on 30 days.

I have another scan in 10 days time. :/

Make that day 17 and 25 after counting!

Could be the 25 so late ovulation?

I had a scan at 6+6 and saw a heartbeat but he was conceived on day 15 I reckon of a 30 day cycle.

I know people who saw heartbeats at 7w but sadly had mmc at 12w.

I think it is v early days and could go either way, not helpful I know!

I thought the 25 would be in my LP as only 5 days away from my period due date? :/

This science of conception is not exact. I went through a similar situation few weeks ago. Was 100% sure I was 6+4 or 5 and went to epu for scan and nothing could be seen except a sac. I worried sick for 2 weeks and finally found baby and heartbeat measuring at 7+5 so try not to worry too much (easier said than done) but it may work well for you. Have they asked you to come back for another scan? I was only with my husband for one week and was so sure i was that far on but it turns out I must have ovulated late and the sperm has stayed alive. Fingers crossed for you xxx

I have a 30-31 day cycle, and I usually ovulate around day 20. I never knew this until I charted, I assumed I would be day 14. As it turns out I have an unusually short luteal phase of 10/11 days - most people's are at least 12. It never stopped me conceiving seven times though.

Just say you also ovulated on day 20, as sperm can hang around for up to 3-5 days, that would "buy" you 6 days, putting you at 6w1d. Allowing for a bit of variation due to the tiny size of what is being scanned, you're definitely still in with a chance!

10 days you will hopefully get an answer. I know they're going to be a very slow 10 days.. been there. It's not looking great but it's not looking terrible either - totally could go either way.

If it helps my dates were almost a week off what I thought and I still don't really get the science behind why as I was tracking ovulation and stuff. I hope you have good news.

I had a similar experience yesterday at my early scan
We did ivf and yesterday I was 6 weeks 2 days

The scan showed an empty sac. At one point the nurse thought there may be a tiny something on one side but she said we needed to come back in 2 weeks and not to get out hopes up
Is there any possibility given exact dates for ivf that it could be ok in a week? I have booked a scan next week as don't think i can't wait 2 weeks

I've had if both ways, first pregnancy, scan at 12 weeks. No heartbeat as hadn't made it past 5/6 weeks. But with my second (who is now a happy toddler) early scan was too early to detect anything but a week later it was there.

My scan is a week today so we are keeping everything crossed, as you can imagine.

Thank you CrispyFB for your detailed post which has reassured me about my dates. My cycle has been spot on 30 for years so thinking we could have conceived on day 25 was really puzzling me as I thought a 5 day LP wouldn't be likely.
