Well, you could get a really unflattering shade....

Oh, you mean health risks. None, as far as I know

Don't think there are any. My natural hair colour is now sadly grey grey grey and has been since my early 20s. When I was pregnant with ds, there was NO CHANCE that I was going to stop dying it and all the advice I had was that it was absolutely fine. Go for it

My grey hair also remained undercover during my pregnancies.

Apparently you can get organic highlights at good places. My sil was too vain to go nine months without coloring her hair!

the chemicals in hair dyes are pretty safe. chemicals can be absorbed into the body through the scalp but not through hair itself

there is really a negligible risk if doing it yourself wear gloves and keep on for the minimum time and have foils in a well ventilated room

or go to the hairdressers and use a predominantly natural product

or if you are worried use henna!

I left mine and had lovely white streaks for both pregnancies. Although as skerriesmum says you can get good organic dyes now. I asked my consultant about it and he said it was the first time, anyone had ever asked him that mind you it was Scotland and I was old enough to be the nan of most of the other babies being born

I had a full head highlights at 13 wks. Apparently it's better to get highlights / meche colour as less touches your scalp. Also, my hairdresser mentioned about all the pregnant hairdressers - hadn't thought about that but they have more contact than an hour or so every couple of months.

There is no evidence of health risks to the baby but it can make your hair unpredictable. I have had mine coloured twice in this pregnancy (once at 13 weeks and once at 29 weeks). The first time the colour didnt take properly and they had to put another one on top to get the right colour. I had never had a problem with colouring it before so we put it down to me being pregnant. The second time we were prepared and the hairdresser was determined it would work first time and it did!!

clairemow · 04/08/2006 20:43

I think it's fine. Have had mine highlighted this pregnancy. I wouldn't go for a peroxide or all over dye necessarily though, as then they paint it on and lots of the dye has contact with your skin - with highlights, it doesn't.

titchy77 · 04/08/2006 21:41

i had mine highlighted at 7 weeks and it was fine it did take a lot longer to take thou!!

CurrantBun · 09/08/2006 12:38

I think it's absolutely fine. I told my hairdresser just in case it affected the colour, but she said it was fine to go ahead and it turned out no different from usual. I have organic foil highlights so nothing touches my scalp anyway.

I have very fine, naturally mousy hair and I'm afraid that having had highlights since the age of 17, there's no way I'm going to forego them while I'm pregnant!

The only thing I've found its that they've faded more quickly than usual this time.

I dyed my hair at home every 4 weeks during both pregnancies with no problems. I believe any perceived risks are hypothetical.

Hi I read everything I could find on this as I am an older pregnant mum with a lot of grey hair, and had heard about risks of colouring it. The thing that got me was that nobody actually knows. Hair product websites just use very vague wording, and other sites say things like 'probably all right'.

The advice seemed to be:

  • don't do it in the first trimester as the fetus is developing.
  • highlights are better than full colour
  • use 'all natural' hair dyes

Well I tried the third of these and frankly it was expensive and didn't cover the grey very well over my parting. So I'm back to square one again. My feeling was that if there is even a possibility that it might harm the baby I wouldn't do it. But I hate having badger hair!
