Nuchal fold scan :-(

I had my 12 week scan today and I wanted it to be a wonderful experience but sadly it had a cloud hanging over it.

Everything is fine including three of the four Downs syndrome markers. The one that wasn't was the fluid on the back of the neck. Apparently the maximum normal amount is 2.2mm and my baby's is 2.3mm.

The midwife is calling me tomorrow with the personalised chances of me having a Downs baby and she said she's not concerned at all. I really hope she's right.

Try not to panic. Your nuchal is only fractionally high, if it is high. If your bloods come back good your statistical risk is likely to be low. Don't worry until you know, you are probably worrying for nothing.

P.s. if you are likely to be asking further advice on this, it might be worth knowing that quite a lot of people find the phrasing 'Downs baby' offensive. The accepted terminology is a baby with Downs Syndrome. Smile

Oh right, thank you.

Mine was 1.9mm with dd who was 1/7000 and 2.2mm with this baby which did screen high risk but ONLY because of crazy blood work, nuchal was considered normal. Both babies do not have down syndrome.

Mindboggle · 04/02/2014 18:56

I had 2.9mm, the sonographer at the time said that they don't start to worry until it's 4mm or above (even that doesn't mean there's necessarily a problem). I came in at a high risk with the bloods too but everything turned out fine.

VJONES - "typical" as in the amount of chromosomes most people have. It's another one of those terminology things - "normal" can be seen as offensive to some. It is a bit of a minefield if it's not an area you're familiar with! I ended up learning a lot as I spent 20 weeks waiting it out pre Harmony-style tests as I didn't want to do invasive testing like CVS/amnio with DS.

This is a great read: www.ozarksdsg.org/docs/dsgolanguage.pdf Smile

In other words, as far as I know, there are no major chromosomal issues with any of my children!

panicmechanic · 04/02/2014 22:31

Hi Vjones, also to add the nuchal fold is one marker and they take all of the other markers into consideration.

I did the harmony (with fmc who are great) and got 1:10000 and my NHS combined test was 1:140!

I was definitely told that 3.5mm was the point where they get concerned.

Hope that helps

VJONES1985 · 04/02/2014 22:35

What does Harmony involve? Is it just blood tests?

Yes it's a blood test and scan. Check out the fmc website. The results do take two weeks

Owlysims · 05/02/2014 09:37

Oh Vjones sorry you're having a bit if a tough time, hope midwife comes back with good news! I don't have any advice didn't have it with dd and my scans nit until Monday with this pregnancy. But from what others have said it sounds positive! Thanks

GingerRodgers · 05/02/2014 14:57

How are you doing today Vj?
Any news?

PaulaAtMummyKnowsBest · 05/02/2014 20:41

I too had a measurement of 2.3

I had the harmony at FMC and they were great.

I am 38 and it was my 4th baby. I now have a very healthy, baby girl with no health issues at all.

Heatherbell1978 · 05/02/2014 20:46

Hi I had my 12wk scan yesterday and was told than anything up to 3.5 is normal so doesn't sound like you gave anything to worry about:) x

Plateofcrumbs · 05/02/2014 21:34

I had an NT measurement of 2.5mm which I was told was a little higher than average. I had other markers too which made me high risk (NT alone would not have done). I had a CVS and baby does not have Downs Syndrome. Hope your blood results have put you as low risk.

VJONES1985 · 06/02/2014 07:01

Hi all. Thanks for the private messages I've received about this. Got a call yesterday and my chances of having a baby with a chromosonal issue is 1:114,000 so am pleased with that!

Next thing to 'worry' about is the specialist scan I have at around 20 weeks to check the chambers of baby's heart, as I have T1 diabetes which can cause heart problems in the baby.

VJONES There's a type 1 diabetics thread in pregnancy come and join us! (Although my second is 14 months now Wink)

Owlysims · 06/02/2014 08:33

Great news Smile

PumpkinPie2013 · 06/02/2014 10:30

Great news for you Smile

I had a nuchal fold of 2.5mm and the sonographer wasn't at all worried (I was 12+6).

My bloods came back 1:4600 so not as good as yours but still very good.

I am now looking at my beautiful 10 week old son who is sleeping in my arms. He was born absolutely perfect and no downs weighing an impressive 9lb 6oz!

Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy and look forward to meeting your little one xx

VJONES1985 · 06/02/2014 11:17
