Huge fundal height measurement. Any ideas?

Hi all
I have just been for my 31 week check. My bump is measuring 35cm - way higher than the curve than the 28-30 that it should be and more like a 36-38 week baby. I was slightly over at 28 weeks (28cm) but this is a significant jump.

MW does not appear concerned but Im not sure if that's reassuring or just odd. Shouldn't I be tested for diabetes now rather than waiting another 3 weeks? Apart from a sore tight bump I feel ok & have been swimming, yoga etc.

Anyone else experienced a giganto-bump or know what might happen if I'm still huge at 34 weeks?

I'm not a worrier and i know huge bump does not necessarily mean a massive baby, but I'm still a bit concerned, particularly as I want a lovely uncomplicated MLU waterbirth!!

When I was measured at 28 weeks I was 31cm but the mw didn't say anything. It was only when I read my notes afterwards that I saw this so I can only guess she wasn't concerned.

I'm seeing her again at 36 weeks and will make sure I ask but I think a discrepancy of + or - 3cm is not a concern. I was tested for diabetes due to raised bmi and it was negative. I guess there are many reasons why your bump could be bigger but as it's +5cm then they should probably be looked in to.

I was measuring 34cm at 29 weeks and now 36cm at 32 weeks. I was referred for a growth scan a few weeks ago, which showed the baby was average size but I have lots of fluid, so I have to go back for another scan in a couple of weeks.

I also asked to be tested for gestational diabetes, which came back negative.

I don't know what happens next though!

I just had an extra scan at 32 weeks. They estimated the baby's weight at 5lb 15oz! I am measuring 3-4 weeks ahead. As the result was 'abnormal' ie off the chart for all his measurements I had to see a registrar as the sonographer was worried about gd. Registrar said all the measurements of the baby, fluid etc were very high but consistent so he thought it was a big baby not gd so I didn't need a test.

I was also told if my midwife was worried I could have another growth scan at 36 weeks however the closer you are to due date the less accurate the measurements and weight estimate so it is pretty much a waste of time.

Not sure how this helps you.. if at all. DS1 was 9lb 11oz at birth and it would have been an easy birth if he hadn't been back to back and awkward! Even if the baby is big it doesn't mean you won't get the birth you want.

Ditto to the poster above. I measured 6cm large throughout, extra scan at 28ish weeks- all normal, just a big (normal baby). Now 34 weeks and sort of hoping big = early appearance!

Don't worry- fundal height measurement is a near random number generator as far as I'm concerned.

I measured 6 weeks over at 27 weeks. GTT was normal and growth scan shows a big baby. Registrar and midwife don't seem too concerned.
Baby is currently breech now (at 30wks) and apparently that can give a bigger measurement. I'm having another growth scan in a couple of weeks.
It seems scans and measuring aren't particularly accurate anyway. Growth scan with my dd predicted a big baby and she was 6lb 12.
Try not to panic!

Thanks so much everyone for replying. It really does help to know that this does happen and people have had problem free pregnancies regardless.

Since posting I've self referred for a GTT test tomorrow morning and called the MW back and asked her to refer me for a growth scan which she was happy to do. For the sake of a couple of tests, I'd rather try and find out if there's a reason now rather than waiting another 3 weeks!

Thanks again everyone and good luck for your further scans and happy babies.

Hi... How did you all get on? X

LastOneDancing · 19/09/2023 13:26

@user2466 - this was my original thread.
Huge bump baby is now 9 and an avid cricketer 🥰

No GD was detected, but scan showed a lot of fluid.
When my waters broke in a Costa coffee it was a sight to behold, I fear a few shoes were ruined.

I ended up having a C-section because he wasn't descending after 17h of labour, but other than that, a very healthy boy.

Bump was normal size throughout my next pregnancy. I felt tiny but also felt every elbow & knee in my belly!
