Anyone had a loop excision whilst pregnant?

After having an abnormal smear I had a colposcopy followed by loop excision to remove the bad cells. What I didn't know at the time was that I am pregnant (had this 2 weeks ago and currently 6 weeks pregnant). Obviously I am bleeding from the procedure and I will get booked in for an early scan to see if I am still pregnant. I am more worried that, if I am still pregnant, that my cervix may now be weak and I will be prone to losing the baby at a later stage which I will find so much more heart wrenching. I just wondered if anyone had any experience of this at all as I am at a loss what to do.

daisyb - i too had a loop excision about 3 months before I feel pg so a slightly different timing to yours. certainly all the discussions i had with my gynae were that it would in no way affect my carrying the pg.
my general mw got all anxious and insisted I saw a consultant ( this was after I had been discharged essentially from the gyan) and the consultant was wholly comfortable with no likely problems o be forseen...I had heard that sometimes they may consider a stitch in the cervix to hold everything in...but really i understand thi is in pretty extreme cases - fyi i had a pretty large chunk of my cervix excised....

I know the circumstancs arnt quite the same but certainly if the pg is ok i don't think having had the loop excision will create an issue.....

Thanks CTL - that is very reassuring. Were you offered any cervical scans to see if it was weak at all?

I had a large loop excision about 6 months before I became pregnant and had no problem carrying a fairly big baby to full term (& then another!).
I don't think they would ever recommend loop excision while pregnant, but hopefully your embryo will be well protected inside your uterus.

loops can also vary as to how deeply tissue was taken and the area affected.

it probably won't affect your pregnancy, but have you asked to speak w/a consultant?

if anything he/she can go over the report from your procedure to find out exactly the amount and area of tissue covered by the loop and make an assessment.

Thanks. It was a top consultant that did it. Awaiting results now and he is on holiday. First thing to do is get an early scan anyway to see if I am still pregnant (as I said bleeding a little but hopefully that is just due to the procedure). If all OK then I will obviously speak to the consultant to find out how much he took and the possibility of a scan of the cervix etc.

Hi Daisy. I had a large loop excision and laser treatment under general aneasthetic as the affected area of my cervic was large. I became pregnant immediately afterwards. I had a scan which indicated that the cervix would not affect my ability to carry the baby. She was delived full term and I had no problems. Wishing you lots of luck.

I also got pregnant 3 weeks after loop diathermy treatment. As we were thinking about getting pregnant, I asked the specialist nurse who performed the surgery if it would cause any problems and she said that it would not. She seemed extrememely well informed and quoted research at me! Neither the GPs or the midwife I have seen since have indicated it would be a problem. I know this is not quite the same situation as yours, but I hope it will offer you some reassurance.
