They would have covered you up in a lead suit?

gamerchick · 29/01/2014 09:23

You did tell them you were pregnant?

RoRo888 · 29/01/2014 09:25

Don't worry your baby will be fine. The radiation dose for xraying a wrist is very low and, even if they didn't protect your baby with lead, the beam was no pointing at your tummy.

Did somebody go through a checklist before the X-ray? All patients should be asked about pregnancy prior to the procedure. Being pregnant doesn't mean you can't have an X-ray, they should just give you a lead gown to wear to protect bump. One X-ray shouldn't lead to any harm, how many views of your wrist did they take?

OddBoots · 29/01/2014 09:26

Please don't worry.

The x-ray will not cause any birth defects or miscarriage.

Modern x-rays are much lower dose than they used to be, your baby would have been exposed to a tiny amount of radiation which would increase his or her cancer risk by a very tiny amount.

NHS link about it

If they know you are pregnant they take extra precautions and cover up your abdomen with a lead apron.
I had to have x-rays on my neck& spine during pregnancy as I have severe arthritis and they were worried about their stability. The radiologists were fab and allayed all my concerns, my DH is a dr and was a complete PITA about my pregnancy but he was fine with this.

i wear the lead apron .. i have 2 views for my wrist

Yes lead stops xrays from passing through. Your baby is fine.

How is your wrist?

Sorry I made you worried, I did say very tiny and it is very tiny. There really is no need to worry.

Rockchick1984 · 29/01/2014 09:52

I had my ankle x-rayed while pregnant with my 3 year old DS and he's fine, I honestly didn't worry about it - figured between the lead apron and the experts telling me to get it done, it was fine :)

Ive had three chest x rays, a vq scan (inhaled radio isotope plus an iv radio isotope) and loads of different antibiotics, painkillers, iv's and inhalers so far this pregnancy. Doctors wont do things that put your baby at risk of significant harm. You would be exposed to more radiation from taking a flight than from a wrist x ray. Try not to worry and hope your wrist feels better soon.

readysteady · 29/01/2014 12:20

Yep you would get more radiation flying so I wouldn't worry unless you are having a x ray everyday the effects are cumulative.

thanks a million ladies :)
