Pregnant with a terrible cold

I'm 24 weeks with a shocking cold. I'm irrationally worried that it might harm the baby. I know it's silly but I feel anxious. Can any kind soul provide some reassurance? I don't really have anyone to talk to about it in RL.

The cold won't harm your baby. Just be careful with anything you take to soothe it. I think I remember even things like Vicks aren't allowed.

Just rest up - it'll pass soon.

Thanks Anything. Just here feeling miserable.

Olbas products are good.

I recommend having a nice warm bath with Olbas Bath to clear your head - then straight to bed for a nap.
You will feel much better.

but a cold won't harm your baby.
(I had a chest infection once and had to take antibiotics, DS4 was fine)

Thank you Zing:)

A cold won't harm your baby. Just be sure to rest, drink lots of liquids (honey and lemon, warm squash, what ever tastes nice) Vicks is fine in pregnancy, check the nhs site for their confirmation.

Your immune system should sort it out but because immune systems are impaired when you are pregnant, it might hit you harder and take longer to get over it. The key is not to let a cold develop into a chest infection etc that might require antibiotics. But don't be afraid of antibiotics, there are some that are safe to take in pregnancy.

Hope you feel better soon x

sarahquilt · 28/01/2014 09:57

Thank you Scuttlebug. You ladies have cheered me up x

I woke up last night with a full on blocked nose and horrible sore throat. I put some Vicks on my chest, didn't think it would harm baby as NHS site says it's ok but does say to check with GP/MW. Nose feels achey and I feel like falling asleep at my desk :( drinking hot ribena helped loads and I'm drinking lots of water and eating fresh fruit. Hopefully that'll sort me out for a few days. Can't wait for my bed later! Oh, I've had a couple Halls Soothers and didn't think whether they are safe? It doesn't say anything about antiseptics or anything on the packet. Just seems to be a menthol sweet to me?

mixi82 · 28/01/2014 10:32

Oh sarah people may tell you it's nonsense but if you're struggling at night to sleep, rub some Vicks on your feet and put socks on. It honestly works a treat, I didn't believe it but have used it on the past to sort myself out and I'll be using it again if my nights get troublesome :)

ZingSweetApple · 28/01/2014 10:50

oh, forgot Manuka honey, high factor.

and I always take echinacea tablets - it probably says consult your GP etc on label, but I know it is not on the toxic substances list and has no toxic limit so I decided to take it through my last 4 pegnancies and also while bf (all kids are fine).
obviously your call, I see no reason while it would be harmful so I do recommend it.

You have my sympathy, I'm 31 weeks with a stinker! Also DD 2.5 is off nursery today having been sick all night and this morning. Thank god for peppa pig! We're both snuggled up on the sofa, I'm sure I should do something more productive with her, but don't think either of us can be bothered! Hope you feel better soon. X

SicknSpan · 28/01/2014 16:06

22 weeks with a shocker here too. Colds are just inconvenient when pregnant- you can't take anything but the mildest preparations for it so they feel awful! Don't forget that if you feel a bit hot and wobbly/achey, paracetamol is allowed. Second the vicks recommendation and saline nasal solution if you're really bunged up.

Hope you feel better soon. Baby will be a-ok.

FoxMulder · 28/01/2014 16:10

Boots sell a 'cold defence nasal spray' which it says is safe for pregnant women. It reckons it's good for when you've actually got a cold too. I'm currently hammering the stuff as I've definitely got a cold coming on.

mixi82 · 28/01/2014 20:14

I thought if I ate two large clementines it would boost my vitC......turns out I couldn't digest both and two hours later I saw it in the porcelain bowl again! That feeling of retching and nothing coming up after you're empty if awful, what a horrible feeling :( now drinking plenty of water to rehydrate and some dry brown bread. I really hope this all goes soon!! Feel for you all Thanks

tinypolkadot · 28/01/2014 22:03

39 weeks here with my second cold of the pregnancy! Not as bad as the first one though, it was accompanied with a horrendous cough. I saw my gp at the time and he told me not to worry, that baby was getting all my antibodies and would be even more well protected when he's born, so try not to worry about harm to the baby.

Hope we all feel better soon!!

Notfastmainlyfurious · 28/01/2014 22:16

I had cold from hell in my last pregnancy ended up at the hospital with antibiotics etc was obviously worried about baby but docs assured me she was well protected. Dd is almost 2 now so no ill effects.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 29/01/2014 00:05

nearly 34 weeks here and I've had a shitty coughing/snotty/knackered virus for more than 3 weeks! it seemed to be waning then in the last couple of days it's back with a vengeance. I've coughed so hard ive just pulled a second muscle in my bump and every time I cough I pee myself a bit. So when I feel one coming on I have to stop, cross my legs and clutch my belly!
I felt so bad today I saw the gp.
She gave me a bottle of Simple fecking Linctus! Hmm Frigging kids medicine!
I sat in my car and cried. proper heaving sob! I know there's not much you can do for a virus, but im just at the end of my tether! Sad

mixi82 · 29/01/2014 14:03

Aww saggy I really hope you get better soon.

As I'm in the forces, we can't just call in sick. We have to go to our med centre, in uniform, to get signed off sick. Then take the sick note into place of work. I swear that's so management can really see if you're ill or not! Anyways, turns out I have a viral bug that's going around camp so now on bed rest for 48hrs. They only gave me paracetamol which is better than nothing I suppose. They also found a trace of blood and something else in my urine but doc said not enough to risk putting me on antibiotics. Think I'm just glad to have the rest!

emmajbxxx · 29/01/2014 19:42

Saggy..... I've been the same. I'm 26 weeks and been suffering with an awful cough/bunged up/ sore throat. It's now developed into a chest and throat infection and am on antibiotics for these, which worries me! But go and see the doctor and explain that you are really suffering. Mine was so bad I hadn't slept in 4 days and literally felt in a daze! And lots of orange juice and smoothies. Hope you start feeling better soon xxxx

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 29/01/2014 20:17

Emma I saw the doctor yesterday. I proper cried. Kids cough medicine was all I got.
Although the rest of me feels slightly better today, ive made my throat and chest worse by managing to aspirate a strepsil last night. Confused It was almost sucked through, and I was lying in bed when a coughing fit came on. I threw my head back to inhale ready to let rip and the strepsil went down with the air. I could feel it stuck down there.
When I woke up I could feel where it had finished melting in my windpipe, my throat was really sore and ive got a nice phlegmy cough today.
FGS! Blush

sarahquilt · 29/01/2014 20:24

Hope you all feel better soon. After 4 days I feel better but it's not been nice!

i am 34 weeks too saggy
i had morning sickness to around 18/20 weeks, swiftl followed by a nasty cold, since then i have had a couple more colds each of which have taken around 3 weeks to shift, so of the 7 months i have been pregnant i have been ill more often than not, i am hoping when my current cold goes i make it through the next 6 weeks cold free!!
