Does anyone else hate this phrase?! No "we" aren't. I am! Makes me cringe when I hear couples announce it like that!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
livingzuid · 25/01/2014 07:27

Well my dh doesn't like me referring to it as I'm pregnant as he feels it's ours. And he has been hugely supportive during the pregnancy. Every time I say my baby or my child he nudges me to Say our.

2beornot · 25/01/2014 07:32

I with you, OP. I'm pregnant, we're having a baby.

Ladyfarquhar · 25/01/2014 07:35

Yes it is awful. You both going to have a baby / becoming parents but a man can not ever be pregnant. Just no.

evertonmint · 25/01/2014 07:36

What 2beornot says. Only women can be pregnant. My DH says either "Everton is pregnant" or "we're having a baby". He would die laughing at himself if he ever inadvertently claimed to be pregnant!

livingzuid · 25/01/2014 07:42

Oops pressed send too soon. My dh isn't from the UK so language wise he sees things a bit differently is my realisation after these posts - people only talk about pregnancy here not having a baby so the literal translation is always pregnant. It doesn't bother me but thinking on it he says she's pregnant and we are expecting. I am going to have words now Grin

I agree it sounds odd. And twee. With annoying pictures of a couple and a bump in some lovey dovey pose. Yuk.

ClearlyMoo · 25/01/2014 07:51

I agree that "I'm pregnant" but "we're having a baby"... However I have described situation as "we were surprised to fall pregnant so quickly". I really want DH to feel as involved as poss and try to say "the baby" or "our baby" rather than "my", well at least when he's around!

Madonnaquintessential · 25/01/2014 08:07

I always cringe at this. I know it's a little immature perhaps, but it just makes me squirm! I for one have never said that phrase.

kissmyheathenass · 25/01/2014 08:11

Hate it. A good friend says this and I have to bite my tongue. naff and trying too hard.

MummyPig24 · 25/01/2014 08:16

I hate "we're pregnant". Obviously we are both having a baby, but dh is in no way pregnant!

Faverolles · 25/01/2014 08:18

Dh always used to say this.
Until I pointed out that he had no sickness, no stretch marks, no indigestion, no baby in his tummy wriggling like an alien.
He could eat rare steak, drink alcohol, wear his clothes without outgrowing them
No dear, you are having a baby, but you are definitely not pregnant!

bakingtins · 25/01/2014 08:20

I'm pregnant, we are expecting a baby. Anything else is cringesville.

dats · 25/01/2014 08:24

Yes! Ugh! Don't be ridiculous!

JugglingFromHereToThere · 25/01/2014 08:36

You're pregnant you mean! (Take some credit - some of the glory along with all of the discomfort. We're having a baby/expecting is so much nicer!

LastOneDancing · 25/01/2014 08:37

There was a thread about this not so long ago.

Conclusion was I've used the phrase in the past, as have about 3 other people on MN. Everyone else hates it and thinks I'm a twat.

Meh.
Haters gonna hate! Grin

ajandjjmum · 25/01/2014 08:41

I don't think you're a twat LastOne - but I absolutely hate the phrase! Grin

LastOneDancing · 25/01/2014 08:49

Cheers ajabdjjmum Smile

I fully accept its twee and boak-making.

dats · 25/01/2014 08:58

LastOne that really made me chuckle (you twat Grin kidding )

PenguinsDontEatKale · 25/01/2014 09:21

I'm with you. It is cringeworthy.

Pregnancy is a biological state. I am pregnant.

On the other hand, I tend to use the phrase 'we are having a another baby' when the situation permits, because I do agree it's about both of you (or, in our case, the whole family including our two older children).

HoneyDragon · 25/01/2014 09:25

Then only correct response to this statement is to stick a fork in the offenders forehead. It's the only way they'll learn.

Mind you, I had to forcibly removed from Mothercare by a well meaning friend when openly snorting with laughter when some poor woman's MOTHER kept saying it when they were looking at prams Blush Grin

Panzee · 25/01/2014 09:28

Ooh, granny saying it is weird. Unless she was pregnant too? :o

My hated phrase is "fell pregnant". Like there was no event that led to the blue line. Only Mary can use that phrase, and we're not all sure she should :p

Ragwort · 25/01/2014 09:38

Panzee - I so agree with you, hate, hate the expression 'fell pregnant'. Why do people use it, I keep imagining women falling over in the street and standing up suddenly pregnant Grin.

Also hate 'we're pregnant' - although must admit have only ever heard it referred to on Mumsnet.

BrunoBrookesDinedAlone · 25/01/2014 09:42

Even worse is 'fell'.

'When I fell with little Jimmy...'

ARGH. Something so grim about that.

Lifeisaboxofchocs · 25/01/2014 09:44

Bit judgey to be honest.

It's an incredible and exciting period of a couple's life together.

Live and let be.

Panzee · 25/01/2014 09:49

I do let be. I don't openly mock the we're pregnanters, even though I want to. I can see them wearing matching jumpers and simpering smiles.

Casmama · 25/01/2014 09:50

I agree. I don't think my dh would ever say "we're pregnant" but it did ask last night "how far along are we?" Which made me pause but I couldn't decide if I would have been unreasonable to comment so let that one go.
