Where did your waters break??????

finally plucked up the courage to start this thread....
my waters broke spontaneously whilst getting my daughter dry in the changing room of the local swimmimg baths...
i normally go in a group changing area with dd but for some strange reason when i saw an empty disabled changing area i used that(and before anyone shouts dd has cerebral palsy so i can use this facility)....
unfortunately i had decided to leave my coat in the car(less to carry)so didn't even have my mobile with me and had to ask someone in the next cubicle to phone dh..
chose that moment to have a memory failure and couldn't remember his works phone number...
dd couldn't understand why mummy had suddenly whisked off her trousers and was saying hurry up and get dry darling i need your towel(so had to explain situation as best as possible to a 3.5year old).....
anyway won't bore you all with the rest of the saga but yes it was rather like a "carry on film" and the manager from the baths(he has worked there 20 years and it had never happened before)was just like a loveable basil fawlty !!!
dd promptly walked out of the cubicle and announced to everyone
my mummys waters have broken and my baby brother will be arriving soon...
Let's hear everyone else's story please.....

never did1! In the labour room every time

Slinky · 05/03/2004 16:20

All 3 have had to be broken by the midwife!

Mum2Ela · 05/03/2004 16:20

Blimy Chatee!

Mine did on the toilet, but if it had been 20 mins earlier, would have been in Mothercare! Would I have got free stuff?

Slinky · 05/03/2004 16:21

You know, Coddy, I read your postings and find myself nodding in agreement nearly every time and yet here we are....

both had 3 babies and both have had waters broken manually

I think we're twins

Slinky · 05/03/2004 16:22

And we're both Keycampers :0

StripyMouse · 05/03/2004 16:23

I wish I had a good story to tell like yours chatee. My waters were broken for me both times during labour. First time against my wishes (long story), second time as a last resort by a nicer mw but still horrible experience and wouldn?t recommend it done artificially to anyone. (convinced it was partly if not totally responsible for my uterine infection i developed )

PipBeckett · 05/03/2004 16:23

Mine broke on Halloween last year hanging up decorations for a party. I was then left until the 27th November before giving birth at 37 weeks. It was a nightmare because everytime I bent down I'd get a rush of water so everywhere I went I had a change of underwear and clean pants. Putting my eldest in the car to take to school was the worst. Leaning over to fasten his seatbelt would give me a leak and I'd have to rush back in and quickly get changed. So there were many places I had the embarassing leak and I sat on care mats in the car all the time.

Imagine my look of disgust when the midwife annouced she was still going to have to break my waters in delivery. I wish there had been enough to soak her!!

Jaybee · 05/03/2004 16:26

I had to have mine broken with ds but, thankfully, it started with a trickle with dd with more coming out at every contraction - I had to sit on bin bags and several towels on the way to the hospital and walked into the department looking as if I had pissed myself (my boots were full of it). Dh then a dumped my and legged it back to the car to clean the seat - good to see where his priorities lay.

JeniN · 05/03/2004 16:45

Thank goodness I'd agreed to take part in a study which meant some of my amniotic fluid being collected when my waters were broken, because my midwife said loudly 'oh, i've never done this before' and then proceeded to try to break them very painfully and unsuccessfully...anyway, then she asked the research midwife to do it and she saved me..ouch

dinosaur · 05/03/2004 16:47

mine have broken spontaneously with both labours but very boringly I was at home each time - once in my bedroom and once in the kitchen (guess I really should get out more)

maybe I can come up with something a bit more interesting this time!

Lisa78 · 05/03/2004 17:10

I was in the kitchen - I'd been on maternity leave for 2 weeks and was sooooo bored, so in an effort to cheer myself up, I had made us a really nice dinner. I just went to serve it up and they went but my first thought was "my lovely dinner"
But it was only the forewaters, the hindwater went in labour, I was stood by the bed, leaning back on DH and they went with such a bang he looked down expecting to see DS2 on the floor
They went EVERYWHERE, even on the bed - can only assume they hit the floor with such force, they bounced up! They were a bit stained so I hit the buzzer for the midwife - I'll never forget it, two of them rushed in, took one look and in unison shouted "Thelmaaaaaaaaaa" who came in with mop and bucket whilst I, for some reason, wept and kept apologising

WideWebWitch · 05/03/2004 17:14

thelmaaaaaaaa makes me larf lisa78, dunno why! mine broke mid labour first time and in bed just before going into labour 2nd time.

midwife broke my waters. I remember it was like someone pouring a bucket of warm water over me and i said,"is that me?"

suedonim · 05/03/2004 18:07

Don't remember with no1, I had ARM's with no2&3. With No 4, they went during transition. I was kneeling and leaning over the head of the bed when another mw came in for a nosy (I was the only person in the labour suite). My waters went with a loud POP and the 'intruder' MW took the full force! It was also on the floor, the furniture and even the far wall. I couldn't stop myself laughing hysterically, even though it was agony at that stage of labour.

Angeliz · 05/03/2004 18:12

suedonim lol

fisil · 05/03/2004 18:15

In bed, with my waterproof sheet in place - hurrah - but I stupidly dashed out of bed to the bathroom, thus ruining the bathroom carpet (since replaced with rubber tiles!)

motherinferior · 05/03/2004 19:24

With dd1, as I was heaving myself onto the hospital bed pointing out that the epidural hadn't worked (I was about 5-6cm at that point).

With dd2, I was on the phone to a friend - and simultaneously on Mumsnet! - when suddenly POP out of the blue there they went, 16 days early. I genuinely couldn't believe it for the first 30 seconds, as I stood there gushing all over my trousers.

Levanna · 06/03/2004 00:02

I'm really happy to see other people's waters have broken in two stages aswell. Mine broke (assume this was the hindwaters then?!) with my first contractions (in hospital). But, as they were only gushing a bit at each contraction, I couldn't convince the midwife that they had! A ridiculous 'they have'...'they haven't' ensued for ages between herself amd me! The labour unit eventually confirmed that they in fact had, but they still had to perform an ARM (so would that have been forewaters?) later on for EFM. (Which was entirely painless (the breaking), and felt so 'right' at the time!)

bez · 06/03/2004 17:16

after my so quick I did it on my own birth, the midwife asked me when my bwaters broke and I said they never! Has anyone else not known when their waters broke. Mind you, there were lots of times when I felt they might be trickling but was too embarassed to mention it to my mw in case I was just weeing or had discharge!

eidsvold · 06/03/2004 17:24

mine didn't - had an emergency caesar at 38 weeks although my one abiding concern was that they would break somewhere and I would be very embarrassed.....

nutcracker · 06/03/2004 20:27

With dd2 my waters broke whilst i had the flu at 34 weeks. I had just got into bed, fully clothed as i was too exhausted and cold to get changed. At first i thought i'd wet myself, so i got up to go to the loo and started trickling all over the floor. I shouted at dp that my waters had broken, his reply "oh god, i'd just got to sleep".
I then called my dad to come and sit with dd1, and to my absolute amazement he walked to our house, despite having 4 cars on the drive. I was stood on the doorstep leaking all over the place and having contractions and he comes strolling up the road, smoking his pipe.
