Is it safe to start exercising?

I have just discovered I am pregnant and am thrilled but I had been planning to start exercising as I have become very lazy in the last few years. I am a bit over an ideal weight but not noticeably. In order to be healthy I need to exercise but am worried having read that you should not increase current levels of exercise and am also slightly anxious about reaching the all important 3 month stage safely. Any advice would be welcome. Thank you

Snafu I'm only 16 weeks with my first so no expert but I'd say if you stick to low impact like walking and swimming you will be fine.

I probably wouldn't start running now if you aren't used to it.

Do check with your GP though.

Increasing your activity levels with gentle walking and swimming is fine, just make sure to slow down if you're getting breathless and don't overdo it. Or you could get a pregnancy yoga DVD to do once you're past 12 weeks.

As said above though this isn't the time to start running or mountain climbing :)

Thanks both for the advice. The Dr was in total agreement.
