Vanishing twin?

Okay, excuse me first for perhaps just being paranoid!

I was told on Monday that I'm expecting twins. The nurse said that both fetus' had strong heartbeats, their own sacs and own placentas. Which she said was the "safest" twin pregnancy you can have. One fetus measured 8mm (6.5 weeks) and the other was slightly smaller at 6mm (6.3 weeks). The nurse said this is normal for twin pregnancies.

However, I've been reading up about twins on the Internet and keep coming across this "vanishing twin syndrome" where women are told early in their pregnancies that they're expecting twins yet when they got back later for a scan, only one baby appears.

Does anyone know any more about this? I keep thinking about it over and over and I'm trying not to get attatched to the thought of having two babies in case this happens.

Thanks in advance anyone who can help :)

If you saw 2 heartbeats, that's certainly reassuring.

I had "vanishing twin" syndrome with my DD2, but I didn't know I was expecting twins until the first scan, when we saw one heartbeat and one empty sac (blighted ovum). By the next scan a month later, there was just the healthy baby and the other sac had totally disappeared.

I had a vanishing twin in my last pg, lost one at 7 weeks and it was reabsorbed into my body. My ensuing pg was totally normal and my daughter was born happy and healthy on her due date

Vitamin C, hopefully both hearts will continue to beat. I'm just so worried because of reading up onn how it can go wrong and there's nothing you can do and I won't know until the middle of February when my 12 week scan is.

Like everyone else I'm sure, I just wish I had a window to be able to open up and look through every now and then to make sure everything is alright.

This is the downside of early scan/technology. I found out I was having twins at my 13 week scan which was still scary but reassuring we were at the 13 week stage. Having two heartbeats is a good sign.

Congratulations :)

mismatched twins are quite normal. DP is a twin. He is so much littler than his brother, the family call him the afterbirth! Confused

Hi twining

I know it's stressful. I found out at 8 weeks I was having twins at 8 weeks and was convinced one would disappear. Both still there at 13 weeks.

I currently have what is probably trapped wind / constipation. And I am convinced something is going wrong! I think pregnancy makes you worry.

They saw two heart beats, that's greatxxx.

I had a vanishing twin this pregnancy Sad (now 13 weeks). It's a really good sign that youv seen two heartbeats & good age gap - I didn't get that far. So far my remaining bubba is perfectly healthy & doing well. Try not to worry (impossible I know). There isn't anything you can do to prevent it like any miscarriage, so just rest, & sit it out. Two heartbeats is a fab 1st step good luck & congratulations x

Mine had already gone at a 9wk scan. Had been lost very early so I didn't feel too sad as I never knew it was there, iyswim! But get a little pang of regret every now and then. Congrats, and as others have said I'm sure that 2 heartbeats is massively positive indicator.

Thanks everyone who has replied, every positive word helps. Any little twinge and I'm worrying myself to death over it.

Also thanks on the congratulations, twins was quite a shock but now I'd do anything to keep them both healthy :)

I found out was having twins at an 8 week scan and after I came across vanishing twin syndrome on the Internet was convinced it was going to happen to me - I spent weeks worrying about it. I had my 16 week scan last week and both twins are still going strong. Now I generally worry about 1. Being able to carry them to full term and 2. How I'm going to cope when they get here!

The Internet has a lot to answer for .... Try not to worry about it too much.

RosesOnTheWane · 19/01/2014 09:38

There were 4 days' measurements between my DTs when they I was 6 weeks pregnant.

They are now 4 and drawing on the kitchen table

Grin best of luck!

That's great to hear Expectingtwins 1975 and RosesOnTheWane and thank you for your stories, de-stresses me a little! Can't wait until my litle ones are here and drawing all over the place as well, just like mum did when she was little, haha.

Imagine they develop a scan app on your phone...God, going overboard now! I wish though.
