Well, not sure about the level of risk, but having never been ill from an egg in my life, I carried on eating them right through pregnancy (observed all the other pregnancy "don'ts" though).

I did take care to make sure I always used eggs a long way from their use by date, were properly fridged and had the lion mark on them though.

georgina these had only been bought on tues and have lion mark etc so no probs there. Also never been sick from an egg so suppose am now worrying over nothing..lol

Obviously, it's probably not risk free but according to this the lion mark is supposed to have very stringent food safety procedures: Lion Quality

It's interesting that the last outbreak of salmonella due to eggs were due to eggs imported from Spain, if I recall correctly - so presumably without the lion mark as it's a British standard.

I quite often have a fried egg in a roll for breakfast at the weekend and it always has a soft yolk (would be a bit yucky if it didnt, really!!). We always use the lion marked ones and they are always within their use by date and I havent ever had a problem.

I ate sweet and sour prawns tonight and half way through dh reminded me I shouldnt eat prawns when pg. I dunno why though, what's the risk?

colditz · 28/07/2006 23:14

scrum. I always ate dippy eggs.

You can eat prawns when preg if they are hot and fresh.

I have eaten king prawns since found out I was pg they were one of my cravings! Told my MW and she said no probs as long as I have them in moderation. As for soft boiled eggs, I enjoy them aswell with a soldier or two! anyway my MW advised me again as long as they are eaten in moderation you would have to eat around 15-20 soft boiled eggs a day to get any symptoms. So bon apetit!

I eat soft boiled eggs and prawns (and have eaten salami ) during this pregnancy, and been fine. My unpregnant friend had chicken the other day, and got salmonella....not sure what the moral is, but I'm still eating chicken!

SenoraPostrophe · 29/07/2006 17:09

doesn't the lion mark mean the hens have been immunised against salmonella?

I eat soft eggs all the time.

WideWebWitch · 29/07/2006 17:11

Nemo, the risk is salmonella but a) it's fairly low, as you say, you've never had it from eggs and b) even if you get it it's not necessarily a disaster, I had salmonella when pregnant with dd, who is now sitting on the sofa watching The Bear.

SenoraPostrophe · 29/07/2006 17:15

redz: I don't know what your midwife is on about though. As I undertand it the problem with eggs and prawns is potential food poisoning so eating in moderation won't make a jot of difference - just one could do the trick. haveing said that, the risk from prawns is absolutely minimal if they're fresh and been cooked properly so king parawns you butterflied yourself ok, prawn sarnie from the local shop - not OK. even the government say so now
