Your midwife should write it for at about 20 weeks. Remind them!

ilovepowerhoop · 16/01/2014 22:04

you get it after you are 20 weeks pregnant from your midwife or doctor (I got mine from my midwife)

toadmum · 16/01/2014 22:10

I got mine today at my 24-25 week check up. I thought this was the same as the exception form for dental and medical prescriptions but its not - this is separate so ask about this. I had to pick one of these up from reception on the way out of practice.

Mummyk1982 · 16/01/2014 22:19

25 weeks before I was given mine

You should apply for a maternity exemption certificate using an application form FW8, available from your midwife, GP or health visitor. They will also need to sign the form.

chestnutmare · 16/01/2014 22:22

Just as others have said, my midwife said I'd get it at my 24/25 week appointment. Smile

MATB1 is different to the exemption certificate, though ilovepowerhoop. It's the form that tells your employer you're entitled to maternity leave. The exemption certificate is for free treatments/prescriptions etc.

I got my MAT1B from my GP but only because of timing of Christmas hols/midwife appt. At next midwife appt, she kindly wrote another one for DP to give to his employer!

getagoldtoof · 17/01/2014 06:28

I have a 16 week appointment- then won't see mw again until 28 weeks. I gather I'll get the matB1 at 28 weeks, but do I need to give it to my employer when officially informing them of my pregnancy? I think that needs to be done by 25 weeks. dats, is that why you got from GP?

ilovepowerhoop · 17/01/2014 07:13

I know the matb1 is different, I was telling a pp how to apply for the maternity exemption certificate as I had already said when you get your Matb1.

ASmidgeofMidge · 17/01/2014 07:27

I had to provide the mat b1 to my employer by 25w in order for them to put maternity leave / pay in place for me. My mw was happy to provide mine at 20w - she wrote it out and left at surgery for me to pick up.

Beccadugs · 17/01/2014 07:35

You can leave a message at the surgery or on the community widwives number and they will arrange for it to be picked up by you.

FWIW I rang on the day I knew the midwife would be in the surgery and she did it that day!

getagoldtoof Yes, exactly that! My 25week appt was between Christmas and New Year - and I had some hol afterwards, so by the time I'd gone back to work, I would have been 25+. So I figured it was easier to get sorted before Christmas. Doctor was a tiny bit snippy on the phone, saying 'well we haven't seen you since Nov, so really you should get it from your mw...' but writing it out at the same time...Hmm

mrsmugoo · 17/01/2014 11:45

I was given mine as part of my 25 week routine appointment.

getagoldtoof · 17/01/2014 16:16

Ahh, fab. On the 2nd+ baby so I'm not offered a 25 week appointment. Will bring it up at 16 week one, thanks for advice!
