How long do iron tablets take to kick in?

Am 34 weeks and been told anaemic. Have iron tablets. I know they usually upset my stomach so is there any ways to help the constipation which is bound to happen? Can I take any laxatives?

Also for anyone who has been on iron tablets, how long before I feel any effect from them? I had them in my first pregnancy 10 years ago but can't remember lol

They should help pretty quickly from my experience.

In my first pregnancy I had ferrous oxide tablets which did have an interesting effect upon my digestion. Shock

Second time around I asked for a spatone prescription which you can also buy over the counter. No side effects on it for me.

I did a LOT of research online (and asked my midwife and pharmacist) and all roads led to FerroGrad-C- apparently these dont constipate, nor do they rip your tummy out. I'm on them a week now and can confirm this is true! so far so good and i feel so much more energised too.

You could try psyllium husks to avoid constipation=- all natural- just make sure you drink plenty of water with them or they can bung you up!!

I would (conservatively ) say around a week/10 days.
I'm currently on pregaday iron tablets and I start feeling more like myself around a week. Imo the side effects are outweighed by the benefits, disconcerting though they are.

Floradix is very good and avoids constipation.. worth looking into! No idea how long it takes to help though, sorry.

Ooh thanks for this - just been told I'm anaemic and was dreading the effects of the tablets. Will ask about ferrograd c and floradix :)

I'm going to give them a go but defo not gonna keep taking them if my stomach gets too bad. Do not need constipation at this stage!! Lol. Thanks for the ideas ladies, will defo consider those more natural alternatives.
The pharmacist sold me Fybogel. Don't obviously wanna rely on them but maybe take them to start with to avoid too bad effects lol

I started on iron supplements today after blood results that I got yesterday showed I'm anaemic - my levels were 8.5.

I've been prescribed Fersaday 322mg tablets (Ferrous Fumerate) and have to take 2 tablets a day. I feel a bit anxious as I haven't seen anyone say anything positive about iron supplements....
