Hi mums
I just wonder is it general to take the first scan at 16 weeks??
I want to take a nuchal test. Is it possible to find out over 12 weeks?
Also My midwife didn't give me a maternity card application.
Should i ask for it?

Why are they only offering you your first scan at 16 weeks? They can't do the nuchal fold scan that late.

wifey6 · 16/01/2014 07:56

most hospitals offer first scans between 11.5 weeks to 13 weeks to ensure the nuchal fold can be tested. I would call & get it bought forward to ensure all the relevant tests can be carried out.

In 2006 I got my first scan at 17+5 even thigh I'd had pregnancy confirmed at 4+6 but the area I lived in (NHS Clyde) apparently "over-stretched" so unless I wanted to pay I couldn't get any sooner.

I moved to a different area (NHS Grampian) when I was 25 weeks and they were livid at the lax care I had received and pushed through all the tests and detailed scan etc before 30 weeks.

So I guess it depends on your area but its definitely not journal so try pushing them for an earlier appointment.

*journal = normal

16 wks is way to late for nuchal measurement to be taken I would be insisting they get you an earlier appointment. 16 wks is late for a 1st scan.

16 weeks is too late. Call your midwife/ GP or hospital.

If you want the screening then push for a scan etc at around the 12 weeks. Sorry i don't remember the cut off date it's something like 13+2 but I could be wrong. Someone else will be along shortly who will know more.

Best of luck.

BunnyLebowski · 16/01/2014 08:17

That's far too late.

The date I was offered was 13+6 so I rang up and had it changed to tomorrow (woo!) when I'll be 12+6.

Ring them!

what's a maternity card?

PenguinsDontEatKale · 16/01/2014 12:06

What do you mean by maternity card? Do you mean the form to apply for exemption from prescription charges? If so, yes, your midwife should be supplying it.

justhayley · 16/01/2014 22:34

Too late for nucheal fold but you should be offered the quad test instead - a blood test that tests for downs etc. It's naughty but you could always go to your EPU with "cramps" or something and get a scan. I'd push for one the proper way first though think you have till mid 13 weeks.

Terramirabilis · 16/01/2014 22:43

I won't be getting a scan till at least 16 weeks because I'm in the US and I'll only get one. Although I wouldn't have checks/tests done for Down's etc anyway.

KitKatChick · 16/01/2014 23:49

I had to make a right fuss to get my scan brought forward as they were offering it to me at 14+1 (mainly admin error on their side with sending letters too late. I'm going next week now and will be 12+3.

Give the hospital a call and don't take no for an answer as they have to offer you all the usual screening. The reception staff were pretty rude as well which didn't help in my emotional state but got there in the end.
