Pregnant again after miscarriage?!

Hey ladies,
I found out I was pregnant on the 7th December. They dated my pregnancy via transvaginal scan as 6wks 3 days on the 20th December. Everything was fine, and then unfortunately on the 23rd I had a miscarriage. I definitely passed the 'product'(hospitals words, not mine)
Anyway, I've tested positive today (15th Jan) We've only had sex the once since, on the 10th Jan.
So, I suppose my question is- could I have retained products? Could my hcg levels still be high? Or could I be pregnant again?
Thank you

This happened to me - was still getting positive tests 3+ weeks later and had a horrible period of not knowing if it was a new pregnancy or the lingering HCG of my MMC. I'd had a scan after the miscarriage was 'completed' and all was clear, but my HCG levels took a long time to reach zero.

So sorry for your loss. It's rough isn't it? Technically, yes, you could have ovulated and have a new pregnancy or it could be some remaining HCG. The best thing would be to arrange a HCG test with your GP / Eearly Pregnancy Unit. They will do two bloodtests 48 hours apart and you will be able to see if the levels are rising or falling.

I hope you get the answer you want Thanks

Thank you for replying.
I feel like I'm going mad! I rang the EPU and have got appt for Friday. It's just the uncertainty of it all. I'm still very nauseous, and have vomited on numerous occasions. I do feel really unwell but I don't know if it's hormones or my head causing the problem.
I just really am lost. Feel like my body is mocking me.
Sorry for your loss too

Sorry to hear about your miscarriage. That must have been particularly tough over Christmas time.

I had a mc earlier last year and it took 5 weeks for my hcg to fall below 5. There's a good chance you still habe remaining hcg in your system. EPU will probably test your levels over a few days to make sure they are dropping.

It's very unlikely if you had sex on 10th that a test would show positive for a new pregnancy on 15th.Thanks

It was extremely tough! As I was early into the pregnancy I hadn't told many people, so everyone was expecting me to be happy. Especially as I already have two children. Fake smile was slapped on a lot!
I'm hoping that it is just hcg levels taking time to drop, as I don't feel physically well enough for anything else.
Is is completely impossible for a positive so soon after sex? I tested very early with my other pregnancies. My hcg was 2400 at the time of miscarriage. Seems very cruel when it was quite high

I'm sorry for your loss.

I'd say if you only had sex on the 10th it would be impossible - implantation doesn't take place until after day 5 (assuming you ovulated on the 10th and sperm met egg straightaway). I'm sorry but I think your HCG levels are just taking a while to drop. I'm sorry I can't be more positive but don't want to give you false hope.

That's what I thought, and the normal rational side of me says it's only hcg taking time to drop. I just really wish my body would return to normal so I can stop feeling so unwell. Hopefully by next week the tests will be negative. I know that might sound odd but I feel like I need time

Id say it is probably residual HCG. Im sure I read somewhere that it can take as long as you were PG for it all to leave your system, so you were 6 weeks, so it could take up to 6 weeks for HCG to disappear.
It is possible to get PG so soon after a MC, but to test positive 5 days after DTD is a little unlikely.
Fingers crossed that either way, you get the result you need in this.

If you are planning on TTC again, have a look over on the conception board for the TTC after MC thread. Im fairly sure it still has 'Posifrickentivity' in the title. Its a lovely thread, full of hand holding and support.

Hi, sorry to read about your miscarriage, it seems very hard over Christmas.

In answer to your question, sorry but, yes 5 days after sex it is impossible for a positive test from a new pregnancy, implantation would not even have occurred at this point even if you had ovulated at the time of the sex.

So it would appear your hcg levels are still going down. I have had a couple of miscarriages where it has taken 6 weeks for levels to drop, even from around hcg of around 2000. Technically hcg should halve every two days, but it does not always happen if there is retained products of conception.

Since you are feeling ill, I think that you should check if you have any hint of a fever, and if your temperature is raised, then urgent medical attention should be sought, in case you have an infection following the miscarriage.

Having said that, on many of my miscarriages my "morning sickness" was much worse while hcg falling following miscarrying. I can empathise with this being hard emotionally as well as physically.

Just so you know, it is possible to get pregnant while there is hcg still in your body. I have ovulated while still getting positive pregnancy tests (wierd!). I have also become pregnant immediately following a miscarriage, with no period in between. So it is not impossible that you could still get pregnant before your next af, and if you ovulated around the 10th it would not be impossible for you to be newly pregnant again, but it would just not show up yet on the test as implantation could not have occurred after only 5 days, but would soon if it is the case, and would give even more confusing hcg results.

Sorry but I agree that it's probably hcg levels taking a while to drop. I was in the same position but 2012 not 2013 and I remember it being quite far into January before I got a negative test (epu had suggested I test to know). It made the positive in May a lot easier to believe as I knew everything was done with from before.

Sorry for your loss.

RaRa1988 · 16/01/2014 12:04

It's highly unlikely to be a new pg if you had sex only on 10th January - I'm sure there's someone somewhere who has experienced a positive test under these circumstances, but the likelihood isn't much above nil really. Sorry to say this Flowers. It must be your HCG levels taking a while to drop - though, really, I don't think it's that much of a while - only three weeks. When I had a termination, I was told HCG levels could take up to 4 or sometimes 5 weeks to drop, though I was further along than you. No harm in seeking reassurance from a HCP though.
