Is Nipple Cream essential?

Hi, quick question, I am drawing up my final list of things to buy before baby is born - I plan on breastfeeding - Can all you experienced Mums/breastfeeders tell me, do I need to buy nipple cream ready before the birth?? Is it actually necessary?

Thanks!

Yes. Get Lansinoh - expensive but really works. You will use it lots, unlike some of the @nursery essentials' you've bought which will get no use at all!

can you get that from boots? While you are here is there anything else that isnt super obvious that you can think of that I might need? I have pretty much everything sorted and am just fine tuning it all now. Thanks!!!! God love MN!

Well personally, I never used any nipple cream. I did buy a tube before dd1 was born, but I never needed it. So it's probably best to buy just one tube to start with.

eenywifemum · 27/07/2006 18:09

oh I just saw Mothercare sell it, I am going there Sat. so will get it then!!

Lansinoh is the business

eenywifemum · 27/07/2006 18:13

thanks

I just have that awful feeling I am forgetting something obvious! Ugh! Probably just paranoia!

Lansinoh. Lansinoh. Lansinoh.

If you buy nothing else, buy Lansinoh. It's magic.

eenywifemum · 27/07/2006 18:18

wow I get the feeling you all like Lansinoh! Ok I am sold on it!!

What about those gel pads things you put in the fridge I think and then put them over your breasts to soothe the pain??

I dont want to spend more than I have to but is that sort of thing pretty much essential?

OP posts:
Greensleeves · 27/07/2006 18:19

Don't bother with the gel pads. Just stick dark green cabbage leaves in the fridge and put those on instead

But DON'T attempt to breastfeeed without Lansinoh, that's my advice

eenywifemum · 27/07/2006 18:22

thanks Greensleaves - I'll give my local farm shop strict instructions to keep cabbages in stock!

Good luck!

I don't think that you need nipple cream. the best thing you can put on your breasts is the actual milk itself. You may not need to use Lansinoh at all. Why not wait. You can always get some if you need to. I've fed all 5 of mine and never needed it.

bundle · 27/07/2006 18:24

i used kamillosan which is also suitable as a nappy cream if you need it

bundle · 27/07/2006 18:26

i also used a tea strainer one day when even the pressure of just clothes hurt because i had cracked nipples (with the handle bit sticking out of my top )

eenywifemum · 27/07/2006 18:26

do you use barrier cream to prevent nappy rashes or just if the baby GETS a nappy rash? I won this amazing hamper of all organic baby products with a lovely barrier cream.

metanium v good but store it somewhere safe, dd got hold of some one day and smeared it all over her face (we'd been using lots of suncream) including along her eyelashes. took her to a&e where they said it was pretty powerful stuff but her tears had washed it out mostly, so no ill effects.

Carameli · 28/07/2006 07:47

another vote for Lansinoh. Lansinoh. Lansinoh

it is the only one worth getting in my opinion.
Another thing I found really great were nipple shields I think Avent made them, plastic covers that the baby can suck through, got me through a few bad nights with ease.
But possibly better to wait and get them at the time if you really need them.

munz · 28/07/2006 08:10

yes definatly get Lansinoh I took mine tot eh hospital, in fact it's the only one the m/w's would recommend.

NotQuiteCockney · 28/07/2006 08:16

Nipple shields are generally not a good idea. I used them, but really don't recommend them.

Twiglett · 28/07/2006 08:22

no it isn't .. at least I never used it for either of mine

if you need it you can send someone to get it for you
