Tiny brown speck in discharge?

Hi, I'm 5 weeks pregnant and the past two times I have been to the toilet, there has been one tiny speck of brown on the paper after I wiped. It's so small that I would probably never have even noticed it if I hadn't been checking like mad every time I go. I'm so scared because this is my first pregnancy since I had a molar pregnancy in April last year and the first sign that something was wrong then, was brown spotting. I suppose there's no way of knowing really, just have to wait and see what the next couple of days bring I suppose. Just wondered if anyone else sometimes noticed that their early pregnancy discharge sometimes had bits of brown in? Thanks x

Try not to worry, I had bleeding with both of my pregnancies and all was well.

Biscuity, I know it's easy to say, but don't worry...it could be anything. Like you, I've been checking every time I've been to the loo, especially early on (I'm now 23 weeks but had a MMC in 2012). I was about to phone the midwife because I saw some red specks...when I realised I'd grazed my hand...another time it turned out I'd nipped myself when shaving... Then I noticed all sorts of bits, before I realised that it was actually different fibres in the toilet roll...(I know I sound completely paranoid). If it's definitely in your discharge, rather than on the paper, I'd monitor it and perhaps have a chat with your GP, that way they can refer you to the EPU. Even if it is blood, a lot of people do bleed in early pregnancy so it may be nothing to worry about anyway. I really wish you all the best! X

Hi, I had this at 6 and a half weeks. I had a tiny speck of brown one day and another tiny speck the next. The third day I bled quite heavily and cramped all day. I thought it was all over. I got scanned at the EPU yesterday and everything was absolutely fine and they could find no cause for the bleed.

Lots of frantic googling told me that brown was probably ok. Red was more worrying (I had some red blood too).

When I mc'd last year, I had not a speck of anything. I only knew things had gone wrong because of an early scan.

I had some brown every now and then and worried due to MC in previous pregnancy. MW assured me that it does happen and so long as it's not heavy bleeding with severe cramps then you should be ok. She said the cervix becomes incredibly sensitive during pregnancy and may have the occasional bleed. Remember that brown means it's old blood so chances are everything is fine. Give it a couple days and if it doesn't clear up then call MW or GP - if you are really concerned then call anyway. There are also some good MW online live chats available, I've used Aptaclub before and they were really helpful :)

as a rule of thumb:
-brown is old blood so tend to mean nothing

-red is fresh blood, best to get checked, but a small amount is probably nothing as well.

try not to worry, it's probably just implantation related.
good luck!

I had a tiny amount of brown spotting this week and my GP sent me to the EPU the next day. Hugely reassuring. I recommend trying to get a referral if you can.

I've had brown specks and even more bloody discharge several times and I've just had my 20 week scan and everything was fine - neither midwife nor GP have been particularly concerned and even the EPU turned me down when I rocked up there because the midwife told me to.

I'd make sure it's noted in your maternity notes, it's likely to be nothing but it's a good idea to keep an eye on it!

@biscuity13 i know it was a number of years ago since you posted on this thread but I’m just experiencing something very similar (a couple of tiny brown specks in discharge during early pregnancy) and I wondered what the outcome was for you? I can’t find much info about it online. Thanks
