Am I miscarrying at 5/6 weeks?

Hello,
I am new to mumsnet so hope I am posting in the right place. I am 5 and half weeks preg with my second child and started drip drip dripping red blood on Wednesday evening. Initially it was a surge that filled a pad but no clots etc. Since then it's been infrequent but enough to make me think I am miscarrying. I saw a nurse on third morning who has booked me in for a trans vaginal scan on Tuesday but the not knowing is killing me. I've had sickness again this morning so generally feeling frustrated and down in the dumps. I am thinking that it's probably a slow miscarriage but I would really like to know what others have experienced while having a mc at this stage. Do mc's just flow with blood like a period or can it take days to start properly? I am still getting small amounts on a pad but the fact it hasn't started properly is driving me nuts!

Thank you in advance,
Becky x

Hi becky
lots of people bleed in pregnancy, sometimes it is absolutely nothing to worry about and people go on to have very healthy babies after quite heavy bleeds. I can't speak from any experience myself but I have seen on these boards that lots of women have experienced bleeding. You've done the right thing to see the nurse, I'm sorry it's a wait for your scan but no-one else will be able to tell you exactly what it is, only the scan will give you the facts. Try to keep calm and positive.
everything crossed for you

I had a small amount of bleeding at the same stage. I went on to have a healthy baby. Will keep my fingers crossed for you.

The only definitive answer will be from the scan. Truth is, the bleeding you're describing could be a miscarriage but might also not be. I didn't have any bleeding at all with my first (blighted ovum found on scan) and with my second I had 3 weeks of very light brown spotting before it got heavier and redder and finally miscarried.

Flymo79,
Thank you for your message, it's nice to know that there's lovely people out there for support! It's just so frustrating not knowing, I am a very impatient person!! Haha!

Thanks again x

Scarlettsmummy2,
Can I please ask how much you bled? I have really heavy periods usually so I guess I just assumed that if it is a MC, it would be heavy not jut drip drip for two days on and off!?

Thank you so much x

Sorry it's not the definite answer you want, but the scan really is the only way to tell. Bleeding at around 5/6/7 weeks seems quite common from reading on here, and some people bleed a lot and go on to be fine. Others have MCs and only find out at a later scan that their baby has died. When I had a MC, it took me another two weeks to lose the blood. Bleeding is scary, but it's not definite that anything's wrong yet so try and hold strong and keep your fingers crossed Flowers

MissMedusa,
Thanks for your message, you're right I just need to wait and have the scan... Just rubbish having to sit and wait for another 4 days!

Thanks x

RaRa1988,
Thank you for your message, I know you're right! I am trying to be positive but yet also not expect too much because I don't want to get my hopes up if that makes sense! Argh! Just all a bit rubbish for the first week back after Christmas!

X

I had MC with second pregnancy. It started with blood loss just like a light period, then the cramping pains followed a few hours later.

Fingers crossed you are both ok x

You can bleed like a period and still be pregnant, or you can have no bleeding at all and miscarry. Bleeding increases the odds that something has gone wrong, but it is most definitely not a definitive sign at all.

I've bled red with all my pregnancies at various points in the first trimester, often heavily with clots, ironically I bled the least with one of my miscarriages!

If you need to know asap and can't wait until Tuesday and have money to spare, chances are good you could find a local private scan clinic and get a last minute appointment in many places. That's what I've done in the past. Then again if you are 5.5 weeks then a scan is not very definitive at this stage either as it's probably too early to see a heartbeat or even an embryo.

Pregnancy is exhausting with the stress of waiting and anxiety when often time has the only answer. I hope you get good news at your scan!

It was like the start of a period- enough to need a pad, and was just the one day. It was around the time my period would have been due.

Quick update for anyone reading this who is looking for answers like I was last week! I had my transvaginal scan this morning and was absolutely astonished to be told and to see my baby is alive and kicking! DH and I utterly shocked and delighted! We even got to see the baby moving ever so slightly as its heart beated and were given a scan picture at the end (albeit just resembling a small blob!!). There is hope to all those experiencing bleeding - I have had red mucus bleeding for 6 days now including that first day where it was bright red and filled a whole pad and am still spotting. The sonographer and nurse both agreed that bleeding is very common in early pregnancy and doesnt immediately mean MC. There is no real reason why I am bleeding and hopefully it will cease soon but for now, I am on top of the world!!!!!

Fantastic news, happy it was a good outcome and hope you have a very uneventful rest-of-pregnancy! Smile

RadgeWeeMidden · 14/01/2014 18:11

Glad you had such good news! I had exactly the same - drip drip bleeding at 6 weeks and was completely terrified. But I was feeling sick which reassured me a little and also there were no clots (unlike a previous miscarriage). The feeling when you see the heartbeat after that is just amazing. Congrats!
