Nicole?

Dp and I had agreed on Charlotte but this morning we heard 'Nicole' and both liked it. I got to work and told a few people who said its a chavvy name.

So what does mumsnet think?

I dont think it's the name that makes the Chav! If you bothe like it then theres no problem

MamaG · 26/07/2006 13:31

I like it - but I prefer Charlotte

fattiemumma · 26/07/2006 13:31

if she grows up wearing huge hoo earings with strange bobbly bits hanging of them then yeap..chav

if not then no its a lovely, pretty very sophisticated name

geekgrrl · 26/07/2006 13:31

mmmh - it does have a bit of a chavvy ring to it. Just a tad, though.
Don't discuss potential names with real life acquaintances! Someone's bound to find something to criticise.

nailpolish · 26/07/2006 13:32

i like it

prefer charlotte too though

Greensleeves · 26/07/2006 13:33

I wouldn't have thought of it as chavvy, although I don't personally like it all that much. It's not awful though.

TopBanana · 26/07/2006 13:34

I think I prefer Charlotte but although dp agreed I'm not sure if he REALLY liked it

not chavvy, but it is a bit suburban-estate-dweller-trying-to-be-sfisticated.

Charlotte is lovely imho.

TopBanana · 26/07/2006 13:34

And thanks for all your replies

Well I have a Charlotte so deffo prefer that but nothing chavvy with Nicole imo.

MrsJohnCusack · 26/07/2006 13:35

Nicole perfectly reasonable name IMO - but I think Charlotte is nicer

however it's your child, so do whatever you want!

MrsBadger · 26/07/2006 13:37

I like it
but it's one of those names that's fine if pronounced with a good round ol as in 'alcohol' or ohl as in 'hole', but can sounds dreadful with a long-drawn-out Estuary-type 'oaw' sound where the L isn't sounded.

I actually like Nicolette more, purely because the o is less emphasised and hence less subject to 'oaw'.

southeastastra · 26/07/2006 13:39

Nicolette reminds me of nicolette sheridan and she is mad! also reminds me of nicorette patches hehe

mendipmum · 27/07/2006 15:22

I think Nicole is a lovely name that can also be changed to Nic, or nicky if she wants as she grows into the teenage years, and back to Nicole to be more sophisticated.
I agree with the don't discuss it with friends. If they think Nicole is chavvy, then what about Charlotte the harlet? My oldest is Heather, and after I had named her, I worried that if she had a weight problem in later life she would be Heavy Heffer Heather. You could drive yourself mad. If you and other half like Nicole, go for it!

1Baby1Bump · 27/07/2006 15:24

i would go with charlotte because nicole is nice but 'nicky' is chav.

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 27/07/2006 15:30

Nicolette?? no way MrsB - it sounds like Nicorette! Nicole is difficult - it is very pretty and also quite a grown up name. I think as long as you don;t try distorting it with rogues Ys or Is or Ks it's ok. Nykole. Now that's chavvy

olivia35 · 27/07/2006 15:32

I think it's a smidgeon chavvy but not drastically so.

OTOH, there are about 4 Charlottes per class in my school. & you'd have to live with it being shortened to Charlie or Chas. Lovely name though.

misdee · 27/07/2006 15:34

Nicole is not chavvy at all!!!

(its my dd1 name) dh+1 have a friend called Nicole and we agreed it was beautiful name. Nicole does not like to be nikki, or nik, or nicola. her name is NICOLE she shouts at people who say it wrong

bundle · 27/07/2006 15:36

there's a complete minx at dd's school called Nicole, which puts me off a bit
