20 week scan - boy?

Hi, we had our 20 week scan yesterday, and were thrilled to find our baby healthy. We decided not to find out the gender just because neither of us felt very bothered about knowing. However, DP thinks he noticed that baby is a boy. I've been told that the umbilical cord can be mistaken for penis, however DP says he clearly saw balls and a willy (God knows where I was looking because I didn't see anything!) Any opinions on whether this means chances are baby is a boy or can girl parts sometimes look a bit like this at 20 weeks as well? Btw we really don't mind what gender baby is, we're just very curious now because of what DP says he saw at the scan! I look forward to hearing your opinions! :-)

Lots of people say that they saw on the scan that they were having a boy, particularly if given a good flash. But if you don't know what you are looking for you can easily make a mistake. Your DH might well be right, but I wouldn't be banking on it!

We found out at our scan - and it was a boy! DH was convinced he could see our LO's bits but the sonographer kindly explained that was actually the umbilical cord! It is very easy to mistake the two. Right at the end of the scan he showed us the bottom end and once we realised what we were seeing there was no mistaking the sex. However if we hadn't been told what we were looking at we would have been a bit clueless tbh ;)

We had our 20 week scan recently and weren't planning on finding out the sex but I defiantly saw it was a boy. In the end we asked the scanner to confirm it as it would have driven me mad wondering and it was :-) So I think it can be obvious but it has to be from the angle right imbetween the legs.

seashell81 · 09/01/2014 13:52

Just for a bit more info, I think the short was from side on. DH said the body was all smooth and then there was balls and little willy. I just wish i'd seen for myself! I actually phoned the clinic afterwards to see if they could confirm but they said as we hadn't requested a gender scan they were unable to confirm. I guess we're guna have to wait till baby arrives to know for sure! In the mean time we are talking boy names! ...

I think it's practically impossible to tell from the side....when they look they do the potty shot right imbetween the legs...google it and you will see the difference. There is no way I would have seen anything from the side view! I can imagine its driving you mad but I would say if it was from the side and unless you know the kind of shot you are looking for you wouldn't be able to tell.

I definitely saw a willy at DC3's scan but she's definitely a girl. I would have put money on it not being her umbilical cord.

IAmTheOneWhoKnocks · 09/01/2014 14:06

Have you got a picture of the scan? I love guessing on them!

MrsBungle · 09/01/2014 14:07

We asked at dc2's so the sonagrapher put it in the right place and the screen was filled with a willy and balls, it was very obvious!

meditrina · 09/01/2014 14:14

If it's a clear crotch shot, then it's usually unambiguous, even to a lay person.

Any other presentation, and you'd need to be fairly experienced to assess what you are seeing.

seashell81 · 09/01/2014 14:18

IAmTheOneWhoKnocks - we have scan photo but not below the waist i'm afraid.

Unless your DH is a sonographer I would say there's no way you can be sure either way.

There must be a reason you didn't want to find out so I wouldn't spend too much time thinking about it if I were in your position, you'll find out soon enough at the big reveal!

pettyprudence · 09/01/2014 18:40

Ovaries apparently look a lot like testicles on the scan.... Our sonographer turned the screen away each time (several scans) but I did tell them I had no idea what I was looking for so they needn't worry! The scans just look like black and white blurs to me!

CrispyFB · 09/01/2014 18:43

We were told 80% boy at just gone 16 weeks at a dedicated sex scan with DC2. Well, she wasn't.

So if an experienced sex-determining sonographer can make a mistake.. (although she did clarify she couldn't be certain) then a glimpse by an unqualified person surely does not mean much!

However I guess you're now in a situation where you think it "probably" is, which is hard! Would you consider going for a private sex scan? It would drive me crazy knowing "probably" - I either don't want to know at all, or I want to be certain!!

TransatlanticCityGirl · 09/01/2014 22:18

When we had our scan recently I could see within about 10 seconds that it was a boy. We were sent away twice as baby wasn't in a good position to get all the anomaly measurements and during the first break I told DH that it was definitely a boy. He didn't believe me and said I didn't know what I was looking at, however I saw something that I definitely didn't see when we had our scan for DD a few years ago.
Gender identification was done in part 3 of the scan and lo and behold, we are having a boy.

Ilovekittyelise · 10/01/2014 22:47

with our first (boy) we wanted to know the sex and weretold boy. despite having a number of scans (growth etc) never saw evidence for myself.

this little chaps another story. every time i have a scan with different sonographer they ask if i know the sex i say yes then there is laughter, theres no mistaking this one and i would be able to see regardless of whether it was pointed out.

mankini for his first birthday methinks!

Writerwannabe83 · 11/01/2014 01:59

I had a gender scan at 16 weeks and there was a very obvious penis and very obvious testicles so I imagine at 20 weeks it would be even clearer. IMO you can't confuse a penis with the umbilical cord, the cord is just too long and thick to be considered a tiny penis. I knew what I was looking at as soon as I saw it and cried out, "That looks like a penis, we're having a boy aren't we??!" I was so excited and happy!!

Obviously you can't be 100% sure if it hadn't come from the Sonographer but if your DP is really convinced he saw a penis and testicles then I'd probably lean towards his way of thinking Grin

PenguinsDontEatKale · 11/01/2014 07:26

It really depends on the angle I think Writer. At some it is very clear, but at others they can be confused. Sounds like you got a clear view!

CuppaSarah · 11/01/2014 08:51

We had a gender scan at 22 weeks and the sonographer told us we were having a boy, then a few minutes later changed her mind to girl. So even the professionals can get it muddled(We did have a girl, it was the umbilical cord between her legs)
