Sorry if it's TMI but I am so constipated, it's really uncomfortable. Just looking for any advice on how to relieve it, never suffered before so don't know what works best.
I already eat wholemeal bread/weetabix etc and a fair bit of fruit but I'm looking for something that's going to take more effect than that!

Feeling exactly the same! Haven't got a docs appointment until Thursday so was gonna ask then but sooo uncomfortable I'm going to the chemist in the morning. Will let you know if I find anything...

diddlediddledumpling · 06/01/2014 19:40

Prune juice works.

Riprap63 · 06/01/2014 19:41

Are you on prescription iron, if so dump it and buy spatone.

Kiwis are good for getting you moving.

Don't overdo fibre, drink lots of water.

Walk, walk, walk.

ChampagneTastes · 06/01/2014 19:42

Oh God I remember this. I countered it by eating tonnes of dried fruit. Figs, prunes, apricots, raisins. Nuts also seemed to help. I made a little pot to go to work with me everyday and it kept everything regular. Hope you get some relief soon!

Lactulose is safe to take throughout pregnancy and can be bought from any pharmacy. It doesn't work overly quick so have to take for a few days and drink plenty of water before it takes effect...

HavingAnOffDAy · 06/01/2014 19:44

Is second lactulose, you need to take it regularly though

diddlediddledumpling · 06/01/2014 19:44

Seriously, one glass of prune juice worked for me. After about 6 days of feeling awful. Cheap, quick and good for you.

HavingAnOffDAy · 06/01/2014 19:44

I'd second, not is second...that makes no sense!

3littlefrogs · 06/01/2014 19:45

Prunes, stewed apple, lentil soup, cooked carrots, salad, oranges, porridge, loads of water. Pregnancy really slows down the progress of your gut, so you need more water /liquids than usual to help things along.

Avoid too much weetabix, steer clear of things like all bran as they just solidify into a huge blockage. (painful).

You can buy lactulose over the counter - I found it really good and very gentle.

3littlefrogs · 06/01/2014 19:46

Cross posted with lots of people.

IAmTheOneWhoKnocks · 06/01/2014 19:46

Right I'm getting some prune juice ASAP! How long does it take to work? Just wondering if it's worth going out for some now.

I found Lactulose useless during pregnancy. Movicol is effective though - try to get a repeat prescription!

Cariad007 · 06/01/2014 19:55

You can also get Lactulose on prescription from your doctor if you have a maternity exemption card and then it's free.

ChampagneTastes · 06/01/2014 19:56

I would go now - and if you can't get juice, just get dried fruit - honestly it's magic.

3littlefrogs · 06/01/2014 20:08

If you eat dried fruit it is really important to drink lots of water with it.

ClearlyMoo · 06/01/2014 20:11

Prune juice now. I ended up drinking it mixed with ribena, as it isn't the nicest.

How many weeks are you ?

I suffered badly in first trimester. So far so good since about 14 weeks. (I'm 22 now)!

I also took

IAmTheOneWhoKnocks · 06/01/2014 20:24

Sent DP out to get me some prune juice, doesn't taste too bad on its own to be honest. Also got some hot water to see if that gets things moving.

Cheers for the advice everyone!

Try All Bran, not the flakes, the proper stuff. I know you think you may not like it. But it WORKS. And, you can get used to anything if you have to. Also stewed apple is excellent.Try it with All Bran!
Seriously, if you are so uncomfortable it's worth it.
I shall be expecting a report in a couple of days!!!

MyNameIsWinkly · 06/01/2014 20:44

Are you on multivitamins? Apparently Pregnacare is a bitch for constipation. I'm on the Tesco ones and I swear they have something in them to counter it, I've had no trouble with constipation (quite the opposite) apart from when I went away for 3 days and forgot to take them.

Nevercan · 06/01/2014 20:48

Go swimming - it lifts all the weight and has the desired effect Grin

Imnotsurehowtogetthisout · 06/01/2014 20:51

Definitely lactulose!

IAmTheOneWhoKnocks · 06/01/2014 21:29

I'm not going to go in to details but the hot water and prune juice definitely work!

Movicol has always been better for me, lactulose makes my tummy all bubbly and weird which in turn makes me sick, while Movicol causea no side effects whatsoever.

A friend's trick was to squeeze half a lemon in lukewarm water, drink it quickly, go shower and by the time you're finished you are ready to 'go'. I haven't been abke to try this because of morning sickness, pretty sure it would have made me puke...
