Hi all just a quick one cough medicine...
I've had a cough after a cold for about 8 weeks now
Gp gave me antibiotics to clear the remaining infection and hoped that would clear the cough
It hasn't gone but I've read on net doctors that benelyn dry cough Is safe to use in 2nd trimester has anyone tried it? This cough is driving me and dp nuts!

Benylin DM (dextromethorphan or something like that) is safe to use. There was a study once that claimed it caused birth defects in chick embryos, which caused a big media scare about using it during pregnancy, but at was firmly debunked because chick embryos are not a good comparison, they were given extremely high doses, and umma studies have shown no malformations above the normal base line expected. That being said, the only time it was a concern would be first trimester, so go ahead and use it if the cough is keeping you up at night. Maybe just mention it to your doctor first, though. It could be there there's a better way to help your cough if you're at all worried about using a cough suppressant.

Gah, sorry for the typos. Here's a link discussing the chick study: www.motherisk.org/women/updatesDetail.jsp?content_id=321

Ugh, I know how you feel, went into hospital yesterday it got so bad in the night, could hardly breathe. Mine's 7 weeks now. (The cough, not baby!) Antibiotics did bugger all. They didn't mention anything I could take in hospital apart from more antibiotics, which I refused as they gave me a rash and the runs. (Lovely)

I'm steaming twice a day, drinking loads of hot drinks and found having a flask of hot water by the bed all night helped last night if I woke up coughing. Get some fresh air too, heating really doesn't help.

Let me know if you try the benylin, will drink the whole bottle if we're allowed it!

Oh, and sleep as upright as you can. Smile

Well I'm off to boots tomorrow thanks to the info hun! I think as long we don't use it for too long it should be ok and I've had the flu jab and drink gaviscon by the bottle and had so many prescribed drugs during 1st pregnancy a basic cough mixture can't do any more harm!

Not too sure why my last post went on 4 times! The chemist didn't have benelyn dm but robitussin do the same thing. If the pharmacists tries to fob you off back to the Gp ask to see the medicinal encyclopedia they must have one by law behind the counter I've had 1 dose as only cough most at night as long as you don't take it for more than a week no harm to baby!

Another thing I've found that works at night is jakemans honey and lemon menthol lozenges
