Abdominal pain when I sneeze!

Yes yes another ridiculous thread from ClearlyMoo new to this preggo game.

So for the last few weeks sneezing has not been fun. It was 7 weeks ago when I sneezed and a bit of wee came out. That issue has been dealt with - pelvic floor awareness (tick), panty liner (tick).

It's also been hurting my tummy when I sneeze for most of my pregnancy. A bit like when you've pulled muscles in your chest from coughing too much and you cough, but lower down anyway.

However just now I did a big sneeze and OMG the pain. Pain in my bump. Slightly to the left of middle (I'm lying on my right side and clutched knees up after in an attempt to ease pain). It took a while to subside. Do you think this is as a result of knowing I'm going to sneeze and engaging pelvic floor (and according to Pilates instructor) half my lower abs too as I'm not very good at not engaging the whole chunk. Thus I am sneezing against taut muscles OR is this something more sinister I should worry about.

Sorry for lengthy drivel!

Thanks in advance for any replies. Even if its just a "yes I get that too!"

Hmm. I dont remember getting pain sneezing. Have you tried mentionung to midwife?
I would imagine its a problem with your own muscles intummy. Rather than a problem with baby though so try not to worry too much.

Twobusyboys · 29/12/2013 07:06

How many weeks are you?

ClearlyMoo · 29/12/2013 07:07

I'm 21 weeks! Lots of stretching going on. Before I fell pregnant I had decent tummy muscles (pre wedding bootcamp) but I've been careful not to do sit ups etc since I've known!

I think its probably just cos you muscles are stretching. But if its causing that much pain maybe mention to midwife or doc. Hope all goes well for you with rest of pregnsncy.

lizziekal · 29/12/2013 07:17

It sounds like classic round ligament pain to me. Very common xx

Dollybird86 · 29/12/2013 07:23

Its the just the muscles in your stomach stretching its hurts around 20-25 weeks I had a bad cold and cough, sometimes this stretching pain (feels really sharp like something is ripping) would take my breath away. Its gets more fun the heavier your bumps gets!

AnythingNotEverything · 29/12/2013 07:25

I had this throughout my pregnancy. Try make sure your sneezes don't catch you by surprise! I pulled a muscle at around 36 weeks when I sneezed while my body was a little twisted. Ouch!

ClearlyMoo · 29/12/2013 07:34

anything ouch, poor you. Ok thanks for the confirmation. I will stop worrying and try to relax when I sneeze but not too much IYSWIM!

Sorry to say but my youngest is three and I still occasionally get round ligament pain when I sneeze or jump up suddenly. It freaks everyone else out when I suddenly double up but it passes off in moments ;)

EeyoreIsh · 29/12/2013 08:00

I had this at about your stage, it's round ligament pain. The trick (of you can catch it in time) is to hold the spot that will hurt as you sneeze, abs make sure you're not twisting as you sneeze.

Spaghettinetti · 29/12/2013 08:49

I get this too. I've found that it hurts more if I try to sneeze 'quietly' or 'politely'. It's better to hold your tummy and just let a big sneeze out...however gross other people may find it. X

Franchini · 29/12/2013 08:51

Yes it's round ligament pain. It's all the stretching. Don't worry. I also get out when I straighten up after bending. Or if I have been in a straight back chair for ages and then get up quickly.

hubbahubster · 29/12/2013 09:02

Yep I got that too, and when I got up from sitting in a chair sometimes. Glad it's not just me!

Julietee · 29/12/2013 09:41

I coughed while lying on my back a few weeks ago and it HURT! For quite a while. I think it's pretty standard.

Julietee · 29/12/2013 09:42

Also - worth remembering that preg varies in detail from person to person. Something that's normal for you might be weird and worrying for someone else.

comfyonesie2 · 29/12/2013 11:49

I would ask the midwife next time if you are concerned but it sounds like you've pulled a muscle, or as others have said, ligament pain. I've had a cold for nearly three weeks and have done the same thing to my tummy muscles low down with all the coughing and sneezing (and like you I'm getting through the panty liners! Oh the glamour!)

Surprisethird · 29/12/2013 13:22

Hi, I am 20 weeks on Tuesday and I get this a lot too, sometimes I can't move for ages as it hurts so bad, I do have powerful sneezes though, I also get it if I walk a lot too

Doctorbrownbear · 29/12/2013 16:12

I get this loads and I hate sneezing because of it. It feels like a muscle pulling or tearing at the.bottom side of my bump. I am nearly 40 weeks and it has got a bit better, not so frequent but it does still happen from time to time. I don't think it's anything to worry about. .. more like ligament or muscular pain because they are already stretching.

lilyaldrin · 29/12/2013 16:19

I get this - I have to brace myself for a sneeze, for both bump pain and pelvic floor reasons Grin

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 29/12/2013 19:10

Oh GOD yes. Ive been coughing and sneezing. It is agony!!

dobedobedo · 29/12/2013 19:16

Yes I get this sometimes! Normal I think.

RaRa1988 · 30/12/2013 08:02

I get this. It's amazingly painful while it lasts, isn't it? Hmm Mine's usually across between my hip bones and feels like someone's twanged an elastic band really hard, but last night I managed to get it across my upper abdomen and it came along with a lovely burning sensation. I've put it down to round ligament pain. As my GP said the other week, "Pregnancy is a time of funny feelings." Grin

ClearlyMoo · 12/01/2014 06:12

Owwwwww just sneezed twice in quick succession... SMARTING! It also woke up the little one who's now having a kick fest Smile.

Seeing midwife Tues, will mention then!

Hey I got pain at like 7 weeks when I sneezed. That's one of the reasons I did a pregnancy test!! Xxx

Hellymummy · 12/01/2014 10:04

Oh I get this all the time! Everytime I sneeze I feel like I've twanged something down below!! I got it with last preg too! I got told nothing to worry about just muscles!
