Hi

I'm just over 20 weeks pregnant and for past 3-4 days I've been feeling like I can't breathe properly, like I'm not getting enough oxygen and a small elephant is sitting on my chest. It doesn't hurt to breathe but I can't really get a deep enough breath if that makes sense?!

Today I've woken up feeling not right and quite spaced out and this is def the worst it's felt. I've left a vm with midwife but am guessing with Xmas etc she may take a bit longer to call back.

My question is, is this normal? My bump is pretty high and I have a small torso so guessing everything is being pushed up but I'm just surprised to feel this way so early on in my pregnancy. Any ideas or reassurance would be great!

TIA

At 20weeks the top of your uterus will only be at your bellybutton so it does seem a bit early. Could it be heartburn?

Hi

I had this a lot in my first preg, it seemed to feel like I was always short of breath and shallow breathing, especially after climbing stairs etc. I think it is prob just a combo of lack of space in there and everything compressing and pushing up. Your midwife may want to check you are not anaemic or bp too low-which is common.

Try to rest and take it easy. Hope you hear from mw soon x

I had this and it turned out I was anaemic. Tell your midwife. I was prescribed iron tablets and felt so much better.

There are a few things it could be, so I hope your MW has got back to you. If you're waiting ages or not happy with the advice you get, consider your GP or OOH service as it might not be pg related.

Thanks all, still waiting on a phone call. If I don't hear by 3 will give them another buzz. I do have a lot of heartburn, feel like my stomach is in my throat constantly but rennies take the edge off. Part of me is hoping it's something that can be treated like anemia as the thought of feeling like this for another 20 wks makes me want to weep. Just don't feel myself at all which is why I'm worried about it
