Right I've been a complacent cow enjoying the fact I've had no pregnancy symptoms. Until now.

23 weeks tomorrow and I've been hit by horrible burning in my throat, much worse after burping (sorry). I'm on the gaviscon and learning to love drinking milk. But God it's minging! Anything else to try?

I'm in for the longhaul aren't i? I didn't get it with dd1.

I got a big bottle of peptac on prescription . Ice lollies helped for me too .

Hexbugsmakemeitch · 23/12/2013 19:39

It's awful, I found that drinking thick milshakes (like you can buy in the supermarket helped. Lots and lots of milk. Keep gaviscon by the bed so you can swig it during the night if you need to.

A few of my friends found gaviscon tablets helpful but they just made me sick.

MyNameIsSuz · 23/12/2013 19:55

I drank loads of thick milkshakes too, and vanilla ice cream. And the double action Gaviscon, the one in the bright pink bottle, actually tastes pretty good and definitely does the trick. Was swigging it from the bottle by the bucketload!

Ilovekittyelise · 23/12/2013 20:00

yeh gaviscon for me too. dont like milk and find other dairy makes it worse for me. huge sympathy to you though its dreadful.

SinkyMalinks · 23/12/2013 20:22

Rennies orange tablets are your friend. As is omeprazole. Gaviscon is the work of the devil in my world - cannot stomach the stuff.

Writerwannabe83 · 23/12/2013 20:39

I use the Gaviscon chewable tablets - admittedly they aren't the nicest but it is instant relief!

Sleepthief · 23/12/2013 22:36

Yep, gaviscon. Have also heard Lovehearts recommended, which are both nicer and more romantic Smile

Stom91 · 24/12/2013 00:46

Get to the drs and get some omeprazole! Saved me! Was throwing up from acid I take one a day & haven't had any since!
If you can't get to a doc the Zantac (ranitidine) is just as good from a supermarket.

babyrose · 24/12/2013 08:14

Someone else said love hearts really helped them

CrispyFB · 24/12/2013 08:49

Depending on how bad it is, you may need to resort to the omeprazole, which is for dealing with more of a long term issue. It certainly saved my sanity when it kicked in at 6-7 weeks with me, having never had it in any of my previous six pregnancies (three babies) I'm nearly 27 weeks now and never had an issue with heartburn since thanks to that little pill every morning.

It's prescription-only so you'd need to see your GP. But it's my wonder drug. Sometimes I try and stop taking it to see if the heartburn has gone, and within 12 hours it is back with a vengeance. That stuff works.

bionic77 · 24/12/2013 09:00

I drank thick yoghurt and ate cream crackers. It was awful and kept me awake at night.

When my DS was born though he had masses of hair which never fell out. It may be an old wives tale but was true in our case!

whereisthewitch · 24/12/2013 09:03

Dump the gaviscon and rennies and get some ranitidine over the counter. It was a bloody life saver and one a day stopped the heartburn and reflux for the whole day.

I have a pile left over from my first pregnancy which I've just had to dip into at 15weeks.

CorkyPurbright · 24/12/2013 09:04

Gaviscon did nothing for me. Waste of time and money. Midwife gave me Ranitidine. Cleared it right up. I wouldn't bother with Gaviscon ever again.

insomniacrisis · 24/12/2013 09:05

Zantac is working wonders for me. I'm only nine weeks but have had heartburn /reflux issues for the last month. I checked with my doctor before taking it and she said it would be fine. I take one tablet every 12 hours. Still get some problems but nowhere near what I am like without it. Wish I had known about it for first prgenancynas Gaviscon seemed to do nothing for me.

krazipan · 24/12/2013 09:05

You can buy omeprazole over the counter in pharmacies but it's only 10mg.

BetterWithCranberryWensleydale · 24/12/2013 09:11

I concur with the ranitidine/Zantac recommendations although I still need to top up with Gaviscon sometimes Sad. Never mind, think labour starting so will soon be a distant memory Grin.

Elliejmulligan · 24/12/2013 09:42

Omeprazole all the way! Nothing else worked...I would wake up choking on acid if I don't take it.. I'm 34 weeks worst time. X

StillPukin · 24/12/2013 12:24

Another fan of Lovehearts!! :) They actually do work - and they taste nice! :)

EssentialCoffee · 24/12/2013 21:56

I used to have a pint glass of milk every night before bed! I couldn't stand the taste of gaviscon and it didn't help much anyway, but milk did the trick!
