Can baby's position cause backache?

I'm currently 26 weeks and suffering with an awful backache.

I had it a few weeks ago and I was absolutely fine when standing up but when I either sat or lay down it would be so uncomfortable. I would have a constant pain, typically down the right side of my back and nothing would relieve it. It wasn't a dull ache as such, just continual sharpness. Painkillers, hot water bottles, hit baths, maternity pillows made no difference. It got to the point where I just wanted to cry, not because of the pains themselves but just the fact that nothing helped, sitting comfortably or lying comfortably was impossible.

Then about 4 days ago it completely stopped after it being relentless for weeks. Coincidentally my baby's movements became far, far more noticeable. I have had no symptoms at all and have been 100% comfortable.

However, today the pains started again and now the awful pain has come back just like before. I'm squirming around on the sofa, trying not to scream in frustration because every position hurts. Coincidentally, although baby is still moving just as much as normal they are far less severe. They are noticeable but more gentle, almost as though he has gone deeper inside me.

I know this sounds ridiculous but can a baby's position cause fluctuating aches and pains to this degree?? My heartburn has also returned over the last few days, I haven't suffered with it for about 4-5 days. It even wakes me up at night now, I find myself semi-choking on stomach acid - it's horrible Hmm

Could be the baby resting on a nerve as you now say it's gone as baby is moving. I had the same but on my front right side. Went to midwife she said it was most likely this and to wait for baby to move.

It did and the pain went!

when pg with my first baby, I had horrific back pain at that stage, but when she turned head down later in the pregnancy it magically went away.

Yes it can. Try getting on all fours and pointing your bottom in the air. Not pretty but it takes the pressure off your back.

Yes, it sounds like the baby's position is causing the backache. Like Gladbags says, try getting down on all fours with elbows on the floor and bum in the air and circling your hips to help it shift positions. Have a look at the Spinning Babies website too, as there are lots of different things you can do to help move the baby when it's in an uncomfortable position. I see an osteopath for SPD every 2 weeks at the moment and I get great relief for many days afterwards as he does a kind of technique (that feels a bit like tickling!) which moves the baby up from being wedged down painfully in the pelvis. You could maybe try that if funds allow.

Thanks everyone for your tips - pain has gone again this morning and baby is back to booting me with lots of force Smile Why can't pregnancy just be problem free??
