Repeat anomaly scan - all measurements done again?

Hi all
I have to be scanned again next week, as baby was curled up and sonographer couldn't get all the measurements she needed. Just wondered if the whole scan is repeated as if it were the first one, or will sonographer just be looking at the things she couldn't see last time?

Thanks!

Not sure if it varies across different trusts, but mine was a complete new scan, with all measurements done and particular attention paid to the parts they couldn't do the first time.

I'd say they will definitely re-scan everything again.

Your baby will have grown in the meantime so there is no point using previous measurements as it'll be slightly out of proportion & make interpretation harder.

That's my guess anyhow!

I had this on Tuesday and sonographer just redid the whole thing. As pp says, baby has grown so measurements need retaken in order to be accurate for your notes. The sonographer at my local hospital is renowned for her thoroughness though, so not sure if it's the same for everyone.

I've got to have another scan in 2 weeks time as baby was being acrobatic by having it's legs practically over it's head.

She couldn't get an accurate measurement of it's spine, I was under the impression she'd just be checking the spine in 2 weeks as everything else was fine, but then again if we get to see the naughty baby again for another 30 minutes, that's fine with me! Grin

Yep, mine was repeated in full.

The measurements depends on how many days after the original scan was. Biometry Measurements should not be taken less than 14 days apart. For the repeat then only the areas not seen before should be rechecked. Ideally they shouldn't be scanning you for that long a period. There is a principle that we all have to abide by called ALARA as low as reasonably possible. You only need to be rescanned for as long at it takes to redo the missed bits in the first anomaly. It the areas are still not seen at the end of 30 mins then the drs should decide wether to authorise you another can or not. There are no measurements of the spine. They should look at it in 3 different angles; a sideways position, face on to it and going down through the body from head to bottom.

My friend needed an additional scan for similar reasons, they just did the checks they didn't manage the first time. They took their time and did a bit of rechecking bit mainly the checks they not been able to do.

Sounds like it changes across trusts

Thanks so much for all your replies. It'll be about 10 days between scans - I did wonder about the fact that it will have grown a bit. It certainly seems to have grown stronger limbs, the amount of poking it's been doing the past week Grin

MissCalamity sounds v similar! Mine was screwed up into a ball. On the pic, I have to keep saying to people 'no, that's a foot, not a hand up by its face!' And spine / heart were the measurements she couldn't complete. Good luck with your rescan; hope we both have better behaved babies!

worley that's v useful to know, too - thanks!

Roll on Monday and hopefully an opportunity to have a scan with a little less anxiety, having had a positive (if incomplete) one so recently.

When I got re-scanned it was only for the measurements that couldn't be taken the 1st time but I think it was only to check the face. It was also only a week between the two scans.

dats · 16/12/2013 14:10

Just an update: had rescan today and it was just spine and heart, which were the ones they couldn't get before.

And all good, so that's promising Grin

Nice sonographer let us have pics for free, for coming back, too.
